Dear Editor,
I recently learned of a gap in our state’s ability to ensure that all Oregonians have the food they need. Senate Bill 611 will help close that gap, allowing children and elders access to SNAP benefits, no matter their immigrant status or background.
I support this bill because everyone has a human need for food. We as a society can make sure all are fed.
I have seen people struggle to participate fully in society when they do not have adequate food.
Also, with this bill, elders who have worked hard all their lives to harvest our food and paid taxes with no pension or ability to collect social security will have the opportunity to have adequate nutrition.
Investments in programs like SNAP not only reduce hunger, but for every $1 spent, it adds $1.50 to our economy through purchases at local grocery stores, farmers markets and more.
Expanding this program to help all Oregonians will benefit our community.
I encourage everyone to contact their legislators to show your support for Senate Bill 611.
Opening SNAP eligibility through Food for All Oregonians will be a step towards ending hunger in our community.
June Fothergill,
