Baseball & Softball recaps, previews: local schools close out spring break tourneys

BASEBALL

Cottage Grove struggled at its spring break tournament, going 0-3 at the White Buffalo Spring Break Classic in Madras last week. It started with a 14-2 loss to Crook County Cowboys.  Lions pitcher Micah Spear allowed two hits and three runs, striking out nine and walking three. Anthony Eubanks led the Lions offensively with one hit in three at-bats. The Lions lost their second game to the Madras White Buffalos 10-6. Nolan Spear and Eubanks each recorded two runs. Eubanks, Landon Vaughn and Cade May collected two hits. Pitcher Colton Cogburn gave up six hits and four runs, striking out three and walking three. The Lions then wrapped up their last game with a 14-4 loss against the Culver Bulldogs. Nolan led the Lions with two runs while his brother Micah led with two hits and three RBI. Nolan also allowed four hits and six runs on the mound – striking out four and walking four.

Creswell went 3-0 at the Creswell Showcase last week. It started with a 13-3 win against Mazama on Tuesday. Colton Hartman led the Bulldogs with three runs, two hits, and two RBI. Matthew Jenkins recorded two hits and three RBI. On the mound, Jenkins allowed two hits and no runs, striking out four and walking three. The Bulldogs then downed Willamina 18-1 on Thursday. Jenkins led with three runs, two hits, and three RBI. Hartman collected three runs, two hits, and two RBI. Jaxon Pelham allowed no hits and one run on the mound, striking out six and walking five. In the Bulldogs’ 9-0 win against North Douglas, Hartman recorded two runs and three hits. Kayden Roberts had two runs and two hits. Starting pitcher Deacon Edwards surrendered five hits, and no runs while striking out seven and walking three.

■ Last week, Pleasant Hill went 1-2 at the Challengers Classic Tournament in Medford. It started with a 17-2 loss to Banks on Thursday where Caleb Van Ordstrand led the way with three hits in four at-bats. Alejandro Ziolkowski went 1-1 at the plate. Next, the Billies took a 19-10 loss to Seaside. After getting down 7-1, the Billies fought back and tied the game at 7 in the sixth. However, Seaside scored three runs in the top of the 7th and the Billies scored two runs. Wyatt Krauss led the Billies with three hits. Judah Kelso collected two hits. Miles Marts and Kelso each recorded a triple. The Billies ended the last game of the tournament with a 12-11 win against Douglas. Down 11-5 in the bottom of the 7th inning, the Billies scored 7 runs to edge out the Trojans with Bryson Boyles recording the game-winning base hit. Van Ordstrand led the Billies with three hits. Landon Kelley and Kelso each recorded two RBIs. Ziolkowski pitched six innings, giving up two earned runs while striking out five.

Springfield went 0-4 at the Springfield Invitational at Hamlin last week. It started with a 29-0 loss to the Silverton Foxes on Monday when standout Silverton pitcher Ryne Hockman struck out 14 players and allowed zero hits and runs. The Millers then lost 11-5 against Lebanon on Tuesday. Timothy James and Blake Wasson each collected one run and one hit. Matthew Merrifield also recorded a run. Miller pitcher Dylan Leas gave up six hits and nine runs, striking out six and walking five. In Springfield’s 14-2 loss to Gresham, Leas led the Millers with one run and two hits. Clay Rhoades recorded one run and one hit. Merrifield pitched for the Millers and allowed three hits, and six runs, striking out two and walking five. The Millers lost 11-1 to South Eugene on the last tournament day. Rhoades led with one run and one hit. Trevin Moore gave up seven runs on five hits on the mound while striking out three and walking three.

Thurston went 3-2 at the Coach Bob Invitational in Arizona last week. The Colts took their first win 5-2 against Arizon’s Millenium. Brock Johnson led the Colts with two runs and three hits. Brock Lundy collected two hits and two RBI. On the mound, Collin Hernandez surrendered two hits, and two runs, striking out two and walking one. Next, the Colts won 5-2 against California’s Quartz Hill. Johnson, Grady Saunders and Connor Molony each recorded one hits and two runs. Molony also earned three RBI. Saunders also led on the mound where he struck out eight players and allowed no runs. On a fiery run, the Colts went on to dominate IIllinois’ Main West 14-4.  Molony led with two runs, one hit and two RBIs. Carson Wolf tried his hand on the mound, surrendering six hits, four runs, striking out four and walking three. The Colts then experienced their first loss 13-2 against Illinois’ New Trier. Kyle Miller, Braden Corgain, and Noah Blair each collected one hit. Cam Nosack recorded one run. The Colts then lost to Arizona’s Canyon View 16-10 in their last tournament game..

SOFTBALL

Cottage Grove went 1-2 at the Hidden Valley Tournament for spring break. In the Lions’ 3-2 loss agonist Phoenix, Emily Pacheco recorded one run, one hit and one RBI. Makya Alsup made two hits. Pacheco also led on the mound where she surrendered four hits, three runs, striking out 14 and walking three. The Lions then won their next game 6-2 against North Valley. Addison Hitt made two runs and one hit. Pacheco hit two and recorded two RBIs. On the mound, she allowed one hit, two runs and walked seven while striking out 16. The Lions then lost their last game 5-0 against Hidden Valley. Pacheco had two hits and struck out seven while walking four on the mound.

Springfield went 2-2 at its spring break tournament at North Eugene last week. The Millers beat North Salem 14-13, then beat Crescent Valley 16-14. However, the Millers lost to 6A South Eugene 12-3, which earned the Axes the first win of their season thus far. The Axes were 8-16 last year.

Thurston went 3-1 at the North Medford Tournament last week. The Colts started with a 7-5 victory vs. Henley. Gaby Montes led the Colts with three runs, four hits, and two RBI. Raygan Litle recorded three hits and Daphnie Heckel collected two hits and three RBI. Kasey Ogan allowed six hits and five runs while striking out seven and walking none. The Colts then won 15-2 over Redmond. Kendall Miller led the Colts with three runs, two hits, and two RBI. Syren Ferguson recorded three runs and one hit. Ogan surrendered four hits and two runs, striking out eight and walking one. Next, the Colts won 6-1 against La Salle Prep. Ferguson led with two runs and one hit. The Colts then lost their last game in the tournament, against St. Helens 5-1. Kassy Anderson led the Colts with one run and two hits.

BASEBALL

#10 COTTAGE GROVE (2-3-1)

Leading off: The Lions play host to Class 3A No. 31 Glide on Friday. The Wildcats have struggled this season. The Lions had a tough spring break tournament last week, leaving Madras 0-3. Look for the Spear brothers – Micah and Nolan – who help lead the Lions.

#13 CRESWELL (4-1)

Leading off: The Bulldogs hit the road to No. 33 Sutherlin Monday. The Bulldogs have a four-game winning streak and were 3-0 at their spring break tournament – the Creswell Showcase. Bulldogs fans should look for Colton Hartman. Starting pitcher Deacon Edwards should be electric on the mound as he struck out seven and walked three at his previous game.

#28 PLEASANT HILL (3-2)

Leading off: The Billies travel to Frank Wade Field to face off against the Newport Cubs on Saturday. The 4A Cubs rank No. 8 and should be a non-league challenge for the Billies. Watch for pitcher Alejandro Ziolkowski, who gave up two earned runs while striking out five in his most recent play. 

#8 THURSTON (4-2)

Leading off: The Colts head to Caldera to face the Wolfpack. Caldera was 4-11 last season. The Colts are back from facing off against seasoned regional teams such as Arizona, California, and Illinois after the Coach Bob Invitational.

SOFTBALL 

#19 COTTAGE GROVE (1-3)

Leading off: The Lions welcome Tillamook to their home field in a doubleheader on Saturday. Last year, Tillamook went 8-14. Lions standout Emily Pacheco contribute on offense and defense.

#15 CRESWELL (1-1)

Leading off: The Bulldogs invite Sutherlin to their home field this Tuesday. Sutherlin was 4-22 last year. This non-league opponent should be manageable for the Bulldogs. Watch for Elise Thackara the Bulldogs top pitcher as well as what pitcher newcomer Kaylee Waller will bring to the mound.

PLEASANT HILL (0-0)

Leading off: The Billies have had a delayed start from rain cancellations and spring break. They open their season on campus tomorrow against No. 22 Brookings-Harbor. New head coach Nicki Derrick makes her home debut. 

#21 SPRINGFIELD (3-4)

Leading off: The Millers host a winless McKay this Monday. Watch top returner and leftfielder  Emma Patrick-Busby

#2 THURSTON (4-1)

Leading off: The Colts host No. 9 Canby on Friday. The Canby Cougars went 2-2 at the North Medford Tournament for spring break. The Colts left that same tournament with a 3-1 record. Watch out for Gaby Montes, who had the strongest performance at the tournament and led the Colts with three runs, four hits, and two RBI. Kasey Ogan was at her strongest in North Medford, surrendering four hits and two runs while striking out eight and walking one.
