Springfield Police Chief resigning

SPRINGFIELD – Springfield Police Chief Andrew Shearer announced his resignation on Feb. 12, effective March 14, 2025.

“Over the past four years, he has worked to enhance SPD’s community trust, operational effectiveness, and internal culture, leaving a lasting impact on the department,” stated Elyse Ditzel, the public information officer for the City Manager’s office, in a news release.

Appointed in 2021, city leadership credits Shearer for leading the Springfield Police Department (SPD) through a time of growth, policy improvements, and strengthened community relations.

“Chief Shearer has been an outstanding leader for our department and the community,” said Sean VanGordon, Springfield mayor. “His dedication to public safety, ability to navigate complex challenges, and commitment to strengthening relationships between the department and our community have been truly commendable. While we are saddened by his departure, we are grateful for his service and wish him all the best in his next chapter.”

Before joining Springfield, Chief Shearer served 28 years with the Portland Police Bureau, retiring as Assistant Chief of Police before taking on his role in Springfield.

“Chief Shearer’s transformative leadership and professionalism have made a significant difference at SPD,” said Nancy Newton, city manager. “His commitment to transparency, officer training, and community trust has propelled the department forward.”

Shearer said he looks forward to pursuing “new professional opportunities” and spending more time with his family, stating that SPD is “well-positioned to continue making a positive impact in this community.”
