HSSZ Recaps & Previews: Jan.2 edition

Boys Basketball Recaps

■ Cottage Grove went 2-1 at the Stayton Holiday Tournament last weekend. They lost their first game against out-of-state team Yreka, Calif., 64-61. Trevor Cooper led the Lions’ offense in all three games. Against Yreka, he had 26 points. Following was Landon Vaughn with 12 points and Nathin Lemon with 10. In their 60-57 win against Klamath Union, Cooper had 19 points and Lemon had 16. In their final game, the Lions got their rematch and won against an earlier season loss against Mollala, edging them out 63-62. Cooper led with 27 points and 10 rebounds in this game, Josh Bruner with 19 points and Lemon with 12.


■ Pleasant Hill defeated non-league foe Warrenton 61-49 last weekend.


■ Creswell went 1-2 at the Cascade Christmas Classic last weekend. Tyler Whitson led the Bulldogs
in points, assists, and rebounds in a 60-46 loss to Cascade Christian. He had 13 points, 4 assists and 9
rebounds. Tanner Frieze had 12 points and Luke Bailey had 10 points and 9 rebounds. In their 60-39 win against Phoenix, Darien Dewey and Bailey led with 13 points each while Whitson once again led with assists and rebounds with 9 each. In their 55-47 loss against Hidden Valley, Whitson and Bailey led the
Bulldogs with 15 points each and Whitson led with assists (5), rebounds (10) and steals (4).

■ Thurston continues to battle in Abby’s Holiday Tournament in Medford. The final game will occur past The Chronicle’s deadline. So far, the Colts have gone 2-0 at the tournament. In their first win, 69-41 against 6A West Salem, Noah Blair and Lucas LaBounty led the Colts with 15 points each. Elijah Wilkins had 13 points. In their 54-43 win against South Medford, Blair led with 11 points and Grady Saunders, LaBounty, and Nate Stiffler each had 10 points. Stiffler returns in this tournament after being
injured for a large chunk of the preseason.

#10 COTTAGE GROVE (5-5)
Tipping off: The Lions are at Phoenix (5-5). CGHS is coming off stellar offensive performances from Trevor Cooper and Josh Bruner at the recent Stayton Tournament.
#3 CRESWELL (7-3)
Tipping off: The Bulldogs head to North Bend on Friday and face the 4A Bulldogs. North Bend had a rocky start to its season with a four-game losing streak. Tyler Whitson and Mason Schartz lead CHS.
#2 PLEASANT HILL (9-2)
Tipping off: The Billies travel to face Catlin Gabel. The Eagles won the Vince Dulcich Tournament last
week. Gavin Inglish and Landen Melvin lead PHHS.
#1 THURSTON (9-0)
Tipping off: The Colts face 6A Sheldon at their home court on Friday. Look for Noah Blair and Lucas
LaBounty for the Colts.


Girls Basketball Recaps

■ Cottage Grove went 1-2 at the Stayton Holiday Tournament. It had its fierce rematch against an earlier
season loss, winning 57-44 against Molalla. But the Lions then went on to lose 58-19 against 5A Springfield Millers and 59-39 lost against Baker.
■ Pleasant Hill swept Warrenton last weekend 53-19. Cheyenne Green had 16 points and 13 rebounds. Claire Crawford had 12 points and 4 rebounds. Katie Dutton had 9 points and 2 assists. Karsyn Stapleton had 7 points and 5 assists.
■ Springfield went 2-1 at the Stayton Holiday Tournament last weekend. It started with a 61-29 win against Ridgeview where Sailor Hall led the Millers with 16 points and 4 rebounds. Ikunaday Filipe added 11 points and 13 rebounds. Then, they swept 58-19 against Cottage Grove. They then lost their last game against 4A Stayton 48-44. Darissa Romero-Ah Sam had 17 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Hall had 15 points and 6 rebounds.


Girls Basketball Previews

#14 COTTAGE GROVE (6-4)
Tipping off: The Lions go to Phoenix (6-4). Look for the plays of Makya Alsup, Mariah Bailey and Kylee
Cordin leading the Lions.
#20 CRESWELL (4-3)
Tipping off: The Bulldogs head to Class 4A North Bend (7-2) on Friday. CHS standouts Brooke Moehlmann, Kylie Leonard, and Elliette Kinney lead the Bulldogs.
#8 PLEASANT HILL (7-4)
Tipping off: The Billies play host to Corbett from the Coastal Range League. Corbett is fresh
from winning The Holiday Classic. Cheyenne Green, Claire Crawford, and Katie Dutton lead PHHS.
#6 SPRINGFIELD (6-4)
Tipping off: The Millers play host to the 4A Cascade Cougars (7-2). Leading
scorers Sailor Hall, Darissa Romero-Ah Sam, and Ikunaday Filipe carry the Millers.
#20 THURSTON (3-4)
Tipping off: The Colts invite the 6A Lakeridge Pacers (1-5) to their home court on Friday. Bridgette
Nault, Gracie Nissen, and Payton Tovey lead THS.


Wrestling Recaps


■ Thurston boys finished in second place at the Northwest Duals, losing to Crater 40-32 in the last
championship round. However, Mason Hakki was 11th overall in the tournament with 6 pins and in a
total time of 6:48. Thurston girls took home 1st place with Kristal Zamora 7th overall.
■ Springfield girls placed 17th at the Junction City girls invitational last weekend with Haley Siders
taking home 3rd place in the 120 weight class.
