Dear Editor,
In a year when people seem to be on edge and expecting the worst in one another, it’s restorative to get a reminder of the kindness of strangers here in Oregon.
Passing through Creswell on Aug. 27 on our way to camp on the North Umpqua, our small Casita trailer jumped off its hitch and left us – two gray-haired seniors – stranded on a side street.
Before we’d even processed the calamity, we were approached by two men rolling a trolley jack from Brad’s Auto Repair and Towing. They had our trailer on the hitch in a flash, called around to find us a replacement marine jack, and sent us over to Tractor Supply Company. They would not take our money.
At the Tractor Supply, a wonderful staff person named Dawn spent half an hour to find us the correct size marine jack, even going out to the parking lot with us to confirm dimensions. When we couldn’t remove the old jack, we drove back to Brad who did the replacement and got us on the road, still refusing compensation.
Up to now, our experience of Creswell had been restricted to regular visits to the Creswell Bakery. All the way to the Umpqua, we were shaking our heads with awe. This is one special little town!
