What2Know: The final week of the high school sports season is upon us, with Thurston and Pleasant Hill baseball the only area teams remaining. Both teams were scheduled to host semifinal games on Tuesday, May 28 – after The Chronicle’s weekly press deadline. With victories, the teams would advance to a state title game, scheduled for Saturday at TBD locations. … Catch all the Tuesday news and results online Wednesday at chronicle1909.com.
Leading off: The Thurston Colts, the reigning 5A champs, continue their title defense against Ridgeview on Tuesday, with a possible championship rematch against No. 4 West Albany on Saturday. Sophomore Grady Saunders has been the ace on the mound for the Colts, and leadoff hitter Adam Elliott spearheads much of the offense. The Pleasant Hill Billies host a semifinal game thanks to No. 1 Douglas falling in the second round, and the Billies host No. 9 Brookings-Harbor – the team that ended Pleasant Hill’s season in the quarterfinals last year. Senior Caden Richardson and the Billies did get revenge earlier this season with a 7-3 victory, and a win this time around would send Pleasant Hill to its first state title game since it won the championship in 2013.

SOFTBALL RECAPS

Creswell lost its 2nd-round playoff game to No. 5 Burns, the back-to-back defending state champs, 9-0 last Wednesday. Senior Jessica Farrell had one of Creswell’s two hits on the day.

Daphnie Heckel had 3 hits, 1 run, and 2 RBI in the loss, and senior Bailey Tovey had 2 hits, 2 runs, and 1 RBI.
