HSSZ: Conference Call – Week of Nov. 16

Weekly tidbits from around our area teams’ conferences:

Chase, Marist lose state title on penalty kicks

■ No. 1 Marist fell 5-4 in penalty kicks in the Class 4A girls soccer title match against No. 2 North Marion at Liberty High School on Saturday.

After a scoreless first half, North Marion scored less than five minutes into the second half to take a 1-0 lead. Marist answered back less than three minutes later, though. Cloe Chase, a Springfield resident and Marist’s sole senior, headed a shot off a corner kick that deflected to teammate Libby McLaughlin, who controlled the ball and scored to tie the game.

The state title match stayed at 1-1 through the rest of regulation, and the 20 minutes of extra time. Marist was up 3-2 in penalties heading into the final shootout frame, but North Marion goalkeeper Kira Bonser made two clutch saves over the next three shots and North Marion pulled off the upset.

Chase ends her career with a state title, a state runner-up, 118 career goals (5th all-time in Oregon), and 52 goals this season (3rd all-time).

“I’m super proud of this team,” Marist coach Stefan Schroffner said after the loss. “This was a record-breaking team. They scored 104 goals and let in nine. We didn’t win the last game but it doesn’t mean we can’t be proud of our season…. A special hat off to Cloe, she will be sorely missed not just as a player, but as a fellow teammate and captain.”
