Helicopter lands at Springfield camp

The Valley Football Camp at Springfield High and sponsored by the Oregon Army National Guard, ended with a bang Friday as the Army landed a Black Hawk Helicopter at Silke Football Field. The three-day camp had two separate sections, a 4th-8th grade in the morning and a high school group in the afternoon. Springfield new head coach Frank Geske helped put on the camp, which included an obstacle course and jumbo slide in addition to the football and helicopter landing.

Challengers competing for state title

The Emerald Challengers, an American Legion baseball team located in Eugene, are hosting and competing in the Oregon State Championship. As of deadline, the Challengers are in the semifinals of the tournament after scoring two runs in the 7th inning for a 6-5 win over the Mid Valley Southpaws. The title round is Wednesday, July 26 at 2 p.m., with the winner going to the regional championships in Wyoming.

Progress made on CHS football field

Creswell High School will have a new football field and track surface next season. According to the Creswell School District officials, the new football field will be turf  instead of grass, and the track will be red; the old one was black. CSD partnered with the Community Sports Development Council to build the new turf field, and signed a contract with Beynon to build a new track. Beynon is the same company that built the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field track, and also resurfaced Springfield and Thurston tracks in 2022.

Area wrestlers head to South Africa

Thurston head wrestling coach Mike Simons is taking 22 wrestlers, including 11 from the Thurston community, to South Africa for three weeks. Simons and the team will be flying to Cape Cod, with a connection through Istanbul.
