HSSZ: Weekly Recaps

Boys Basketball Recaps

Creswell: Creswell dominated in their second-round playoff game after a first-round bye. The No. 7 Bulldogs beat No. 10 Riverdale 68-16 thanks to 17 points and 6 rebounds from AJ Hodge. Connor Hanson added 11 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists, and Max Velarde had 8 points and 9 rebounds.

Cottage Grove: The Lions season ended last week after an 87-55 loss at No. 7 North Marion in the play-in game. Star senior Brennen Murphy scored 15 points in his final game, while junior Cole Kishen scored 14.

Pleasant Hill: No. 8 Pleasant Hill handled No. 9 Burns on Saturday, winning the second-round playoff game 70-27 behind 36 points from star Gavin Inglish. Matthew Nguyen added 10 points, and Landen Melvin and Hunter Allen both chipped in 8 points for the Billies.

Springfield: Springfield ended its season with two competitive losses, losing to rival No. 15 Thurston 63-61 and Eagle Point 42-28. Sophomore Vincent Trinka led the Millers against Thurston with 24 points, Owen Fuller added 12, and Isaiah Navarrete scored 11.

Thurston: The Colts went 2-0 last week in must-win games, beating rival Springfield in a 63-61 thriller and beating No. 17 Crater 48-45 to potentially clinch a postseason berth. Sophomore Noah Blair led the Colts in the Springfield win with 22 points, including 13 in the 4th quarter. Hunter James added 18 against Springfield and led Thurston against Crater with 12 points. Nate Stiffler scored 11 against Crater and Walker Bonar chipped in 10.

Girls Basketball Recaps

Creswell: The Creswell Bulldogs fell in the opening round of the playoffs last week to No. 18 Jefferson 47-44. The loss ended Creswell’s season with a record of 18-7 and ranked No. 15. Leaders in the game were Samairah Quinones with 16 points and Dakota Carson with 15.

Pleasant Hill: No. 7 Pleasant Hill beat No. 10 Riverdale 59-35 in the second-round of the playoffs on Saturday night. The Billies were led by two sophomores in Cheyenne Green and Claire Crawford. Green led the way with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 4 steals, while Crawford had 16 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. 

Springfield: The Millers finished their regular season with a 2-0 week, beating Thurston 63-33 and Eagle Point 57-33. Against the rival Colts, JB Robinson led the way with 18 points, 5 steals and 3 assists, while Danaeja Romero-Ah Sam put up 17 points, 6 assists and 4 steals. Against Eagle Point, Romero-Ah Sam had 19 points, 6 steals, 5 assists and 4 rebounds, while Robinson finished with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 6 steals.

Thurston: Thurston’s season came to a close last week with two top-10 losses. The Colts fell at rival No. 1 Springfield 63-33 and No. 6 Crater 70-17. Senior Stella Hall led the way against Springfield with 14 points and freshman Addison Nelson chipped in 9.
