SPRINGFIELD — A cascading truss system failure occurred in the city-owned Carter Building across the street from City Hall. The structural failure impacted approximately 8,000 square feet of the 12,500 square-foot building. Independent engineering analysis conducted on behalf of the City’s insurer concluded that there is no cost-effective manner to repair the structure. In Summer 2022, the City installed temporary structural support to prevent an uncontrolled truss collapse while preparing to safely demolish the building. Abatement and demolition was completed in November. The temporary fence that is around the site will be removed soon and bollards will be installed on the north side to help deter driving through the site. There are currently no plans for the site.
