HSSZ: Recaps, results and schedules

GIRLS BASKETBALL

■ Cottage Grove: The Lions had a tough week, going 0-3 at the Stayton Holiday Classic. The Lions fell to host No. 15 Stayton 30-23, Class 3A No. 11 Jefferson 38-29 and Sweet Home 45-28. Freshman Mariah Bailey and junior Payton Anlauf led Cottage Grove at the tournament as Bailey averaged 9.7 ppg and Anlauf averaged 7.3 ppg.

■ Creswell: The Bulldogs’ only game last week was a home loss to Class 4A No. 11 Marist Catholic 57-41. Despite the loss junior guard Dakota Carson had a great game, scoring 13 points with two three-pointers to go along with 5 boards, 3 assists and 3 steals. Senior Lauren Bailey had another double-double as well, this time finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds (6 offensive).


■ Pleasant Hill: The Billies extended their win streak to six games with a 48-30 win over Nestucca last Tuesday. The Billies had a balanced scoring attack led by Brooke Weimer with 13 points and Shyanne Fenley with 12. Senior Kiley Campos and sophomore Cheyenne Green both chipped in 6 points as well for head coach Kim Beer.


■ Springfield: The Millers’ only game last week was a 58-35 win over Class 6A Liberty. Danaeja Romero-Ah Sam led the Millers with a fantastic all-around game as she finished with 26 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals. Juju Henderson also had 10 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks for Springfield.

■ Thurston: The Colts had a tough loss in their only game last week, losing to Class 6A No. 16 Southridge 56-30. Junior Bailey Tovey led the Colts with 12 points while freshman Addison Nelson added 10 points. Stell Hall and Gaby Montes both grabbed 7 rebounds, and Montes chipped in 5 assists as well.

BOYS BASKETBALL

■ Cottage Grove: Cottage Grove traveled to the Stayton Holiday Classic, losing to host No. 7 Stayton 64-51 before beating Scappoose 55-49 and losing to Class 6A North Salem 56-52. Cole Kishen led the way against Stayton with 22 points. Brennen Murphy added 11 points and 6 rebounds against Stayton and in the win against Scappoose had 15 points and 11 boards.


■ Creswell: The Bulldogs won their first post-Christmas game. They beat Eugene’s Marist Catholic 51-41 thanks to three great all-around performances. AJ Hodge had 15 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks; Max Velarde had 13 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists and Tyler Whitson had 14 points.


■ Pleasant Hill: The Billies’ sole game last week was a 74-44 win over Nestucca last Tuesday, extending their win streak to seven games. Sophomore Gavin Inglish continued to lead the Billies with 29 points while senior Brooks Wilcox had 10 points.


■ Thurston: The Colts made the finals of the Barry Adams Invitational at South Salem HS. In the first game of the tournament Thurston beat Jefferson of Portland 52-36 behind Walker Bonar’s 19 points and 8 rebounds and Nate Stiffler’s 14 points. In the semifinals the Colts handled Parkrose 69-59 thanks to Stiffler’s 23 points, including five threes, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks. Bonar added 19 points. Thurston came up against Midwestern League rival No. 2 Churchill (10-0) and lost 65-62. Stiffler scored 17 and had 6 boards in the finals.
