HSSZ: Winter sports recaps

Boys Basketball

Highlights: The Lions won their season opener at Sweet Home on Friday 55-39. Junior forward Cole Kishen led Cottage Grove with 15 points and 9 rebounds, 5 of them offensive. Sophomore Nathin Lemon added 13 points (3-9 from 3) and 6 rebounds, while senior captain Brennen Murphy had a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards (5 offensive).


Highlights: The Billies went 2-0 at the Douglas High School tournament, both wins coming down to the wire. Pleasant Hill South Umpqua on Friday 61-59 thanks to 20 points from sophomore Gavin Inglish and 14 points by Brooks Wilcox. The Billies returned on Saturday and took down the host Douglas 48-47, led once again by Inglish and Wilcox, who scored 19 and 17 respectively. 


Highlights: The Colts went 2-0 last week, beating Willamette 53-35 and Milwaukie 72-68. Against Willamette, Thurston outscored the Wolverines 30-10 in the second half, and was led by a pair of sophomores, Nate Stiffler with 13 points and 13 rebounds and Noah Blair with 12 points. Walker Bonar also had 10 points. Thurston then scraped by Milwaukie thanks to Hunter James’ 18 points, Bonar’s 15 points and Stiffler’s double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds.


Highlights: The Bulldogs’ first game of the season was a blowout win as they beat South Umpqua on Saturday 71-33. Seniors AJ Hodge and Max Velarde led Creswell with 19 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals each, and sophomore Tyler Whitson added 11 points and 5 rebounds.


Highlights: The Millers had a solid showing at the Centennial Tip-Off Tourney at Hillsboro High School last weekend. Springfield fell in its opening game to Centennial 54-46, but came back on Saturday and handled Hillsboro 70-38.


Girls Basketball

Highlights: The Lions only had one game last week, a 51-36 loss at Sweet Home. Cottage Grove, who hired new head coach Pete LeMay a week before the season started, put up a fight in its season opener against No. 16 Sweet Home despite the short turnaround.


Highlights:  The Billies opened their season 2-0 with two dominant defensive performances at the Douglas High School Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Pleasant Hill held South Umpqua and Douglas to 16 and 19 points, respectively, while averaging 43 points a game themselves. Kiley Campos and Brooke Weimer led the team in scoring against SU with 7 points each and Cheyenne Green led against Douglas with 12 points.


Highlights: The Bulldogs had a game canceled on Friday due to a district delay and weather issues, meaning they only played one game last week. Creswell made it count, beating South Umpqua by 17 to open the season. Junior guard Dakota Carson led the Bulldogs with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals. Senior Samairah Quinones added 12 points and 7 rebounds in the win.

Wrestling – the week in review

■ Cottage Grove and Thurston competed at the Perry Burlison Tournament at Cascade High School on Saturday. The Colts boys took third at the tournament, while the Lions boys finished 19th. Thurston had four athletes finish first in their weight class: Holton Halstead (145 lbs.), Kolton Malone (152), Braylin Ruchti (160) and Vaun Halstead (220). Leader for the Lions was Nathan Abrams, who took sixth in the 285-pound weight division. For the girls teams, Thurston came in second and Cottage Grove came in 10th. The Colts had two winners: Kristal Zamora (140) and Averie Stockwell (155). Allison Palluck took first place in the women’s 120-pound weight class for Cottage Grove.

■ Pleasant Hill and Springfield competed at the Deven Dawson Memorial Tournament at Harrisburg High School on Friday. The Billies came in sixth at the tournament, while the Millers finished in 24th. Leaders for the Billies were Gavin Hoellrich in first in the Men’s 160, Brazen Ellis in second in the Men’s 195 and Athena Sprague in third in the Women’s 155. Nathaniel Williams led the Springfield Men, securing sixth in the 285-pound division, while Devani Cash took third in the Womens 130.
