Chronicle: 8 ONPA awards in advertising

The Chronicle added to its 2021 haul of statewide awards this past week when the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association held its AdCon event celebrating the best of print and online advertising – bringing the paper’s total to 22 awards for last year.

The eight advertising-related awards – including five first-place honors and the prestigious Best Overall Advertising for Non-Daily newspapers – come on the heels of the 14 awards The Chronicle earned for its editorial excellence in August. There are more than 80 non-daily papers in the state.

“We’re excited and humbled at the same time,” said publisher Noel Nash, who oversaw advertising initiatives in 2021. “What’s most gratifying about the editorial and advertising awards in 2021 is that we were in the thick of the pandemic, with only three employees and 12-page newspaper editions most of the year. Yet the excellence didn’t suffer.”

This year, the Maine Press Association judged the Oregon “Better Newspaper Contest.” Competing in the G Division – papers at 1,000 subscribers or less – in most of the categories, The Chronicle totaled 14 awards, including six first-place honors and a General Excellence honor for the third consecutive year.
The Chronicle has earned more than 50 ONPA awards in the past three years. While a member of the smallest subscription category (D) in the advertising competition, it competed against the state’s largest papers in categories A, B, and C.

For the advertising contest, first-place awards included:
• Best Overall Advertising, Non-Dailies (Groups A-D)
• Best Advertising Headline (Groups A-D): Pazzo restaurant, “Farm to Table, Plate to Face”
• Best Black & White advertisement (Groups A-D): Harrington Legal LLC
• Best Institutional Section (Group D): Creswell Fourth of July special section
• Best Institutional Image Ad (Group D): The Flower Basket 37th anniversary
Other awards were for Best Advertising Series, 2nd place, City of Creswell, Groups A-D; Best Use of One Color and Black, 2nd place, Chambers Construction, Groups A-D; and Most Effective Use of Small Space, 3rd place, Angel’s Gardening Service, Groups A-D.
