Springfield Council OKs funds for potential settlement

SPRINGFIELD – The City of Springfield is scheduled for mediation before a federal judge on April 18 for a potential settlement of the lawsuit stemming from the Thurston protest in July of 2020.

In preparation for the mediation, at Monday’s Springfield City Council meeting, council unanimously authorized city manager Nancy Newton to contribute up to $250,000 as per the City’s insurance deductible to the potential settlement of pending litigation involving the City.

Council approval is required for expenditures over $100,000. Typically, the Council would not have to provide authority in the settlement of a claim unless it wanted to provide funds in addition to the insurance contribution; because the City has a $250,000 deductible for this police claim, the city manager must obtain authorization from Council to spend that level of City funds.
