Scene & Heard

Scene & Heard: Annual Blues fest, CiderHouse festival, and more

When the Village Green shut down a few months ago, the Rainy Day Blues Society had to find a new place to host its annual blues festival.

Mission accomplished.

Springfield’s Island Park will be the place to be as Labor Day weekend kicks off on Saturday, May 28 with the Rainy Day Blues Festival from noon until 10 p.m.

Kid Ramos, who earned his chops with the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Roomful of Blues, headlines the card along with Johnny Main, another West Coast guitar god who played for many years with The 44s.

International touring artist Johnny Burgin is teaming up with the Seattle-based Joel Astley Band, and Howlin’ Dogma, named “Best Traditional Blues Act” as part of the 2021 Rooster Blues Awards, takes the stage after local favorite Heavy Chevy cooks up its hot mix of soul, funk and electric blues.

The day gets started with the Blue Owens Band of Eugene.

The 2nd annual CiderHouse festival – featuring six nights of live music in the BeerHall – begins Monday, April 11 at PublicHouse with Trivia with Gio at 6:30 p.m.

PublicHouse will be converting its 20-plus beer taps to cider taps and will feature different Ciderhouses throughout the week, as well as specialty menu items from each of its food purveyors.

The music gets started with the Gerry Rempel Duo on Tuesday, April 12 at 6:30 p.m. On Wednesday, April 13 at 6:30, Arthur Buezo takes the stage. Jeremy Powers is slated to play on Thursday, April 14 at 6:30 p.m., The HipBillys are playing Friday, April 15 at 7 p.m., Cherry Hill will play on Saturday, April 16 at 7 p.m., and finally, Meadow Rue performs Sunday, April 17 at 4 p.m.

Fog Holler, one of the hottest new bluegrass acts in the Bay Area, are appearing at the Axe & Fiddle on April 7 at 8 p.m. They promote themselves as “a spectral band that channels the spirits of bluegrass past and future.”

No seance has been scheduled, and who’s to say if there will be any channeling of spirits taking place?

Regardless, Fog Holler will put on a moving performance.
