Janet Elaine McLaughlin: June 23, 1946 – March 9, 2022

 

Janet Elaine McLaughlin, 75, of Creswell, Ore. passed March 9, 2022. Janet was born June 23, 1946, in Detroit, Mich. to parents Howard and Mariam (Hayes) McLaughlin. She married Faye L Gagehabib on June 5, 2013 in Eugene, Ore. 

They were married for eight years, but together for 41.

She attended Cass Technical High School as an art Major and graduated in 1964. Janet went on an art scholarship to Pennsylvania State University from 1964-70 and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Janet then attended De Anza Community College in Cupertino, Calif. from 1976-79 and then the University of Oregon from 1989-93 and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts Degree. She was the visual arts director there from 1992-93. 

Janet worked at Herhang Publishing Company and was a co-owner and publisher, and she worked at the Philadelphia Board of Education from 1970-72. Janet was co-manager for Women in Transition 1972-74 and Fraser Daycare-Assistant Director from 1974-75. 

Janet took women and ethnic studies classes from 1976-80, Saratoga School Systems from 1980-82, Frog Inn the Well Publishing Collective from 1978-79, Outreach Coordinator for Umbrella House as a program coordinator from 1980-82, Northwest Working Press as a co-manager from 1983-85 and was a Community Sharing Volunteer Coordinator from 1987-91.

Janet enjoyed oil painting, photography as a dark room technician, the San Francisco Women’s press project, graphic arts and playwriting. 

She was involved with the Cottage Grove Art Guild and Art Walk, volunteered at the Creswell Library, and Rootworks Art Camp. Janet won the 4th annual Women’s Graphic Arts Completion, she won first prize for painting “Woman Swimming” in Los Gatos Art Gallery. The painting is displayed at the Evergreen Valley College in San Jose, Calif. Janet won the Hope Rehabilitation Photography contest in 1978, University of Pennsylvania Scholarship, 1969 Gimbel Award of Art in 1964. 

She received the Ford Foundation Scholarship and grant in 1964-1968 and Aspen School of Contemporary Art Scholarship in 1964.

Janet is survived by her spouse Faye La Verne Gagehabib of Eugene, Ore.; sister-in-law Annette McLaughlin; cousin Joan (Gyl) Isenbarger-Wagner of New Braunfeld, Texas; and Aunt Gladys (Carl) Isenbarger. She is preceded in death by her brother William McLaughlin. 

There are no services at this time. Arrangements in the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel and Crematorium.
