Sheriff: Support program receives new funds

Lane County Sheriff Cliff Harrold said his office was awarded a three-year Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant, and Substance Use Site-based Program (COSSAP) grant to fund the Lane County Jail Substance Abuse and Transition Program.

The program provides substance-abuse counseling, Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) and recovery support to adults at the Lane County Jail.

In a 2016-17 national aurvey on drug use and health, Oregon ranked first nationwide in illicit drug use. And Lane County continues to have a high number of drug-related deaths.

The hopes to provide 20 inmates a month with Medication Assisted Treatment and 100 inmates with education and counseling to increase their chances of sobriety and reduce their chances of returning to jail. The program will focus on those with two or more jail bookings a year whose arrest tied to substance use.

“While no one looks forward to coming to jail, it’s often the place where someone decides to make a change for the better with the help of programs just like this one. We are proud to be a part of that positive change,” Harrold said.
