Urgent: Volunteers needed at Silke Field

Silke Field, Springfield High School

Officials leading the wildfire relief station at Silke Field at Springfield High School said there is an urgent need for more volunteers. All volunteers are asked to sign up in advance at mckenzieriver.org/volunteer.

Please, officials stressed, do not show up without signing up.

McKenzie River Trust is working with community organizers to coordinate volunteer efforts to support victims of the wildfires in our region. Volunteer shifts are available immediately through Tuesday, Sept. 15.

Volunteers are needed to help with intake of items, organizing, and helping people find what they need. Masks are required, and volunteers under 18 should be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian/family member. For more information about volunteer roles and to sign up for a shift, visit mckenzieriver.org/volunteer.

Rob Walker, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Creswell, 597 S. Front St., said people in need are welcome 24 hours a day.

He said Thursday afternoon that donations were at a good level, too.

“For right now, I think we have what we need,” he said. “It was much slower (Wednesday night).” Walker said the church is “available for evacuees needing overnight shelter as well.”
