CHS: WEEK IN REVIEW

BOYS BASKETBALL
RESULT: CHS lost 39-36 at Sutherlin on Tuesday, Dec. 17
RECAP: Several coaches and players were battling a flu bug as the team headed into a week of road games. There also were reports of players at Pleasant Hill and Oakland feeling ill. The Bulldogs were not able to overcome a season-worst shooting performance. ”It was an uncharacteristically bad scoring night for us,” said coach Jesse Thomas. ”We were 7-for-23 from two-point range and it was one of those games where we just couldn’t get anything to go in.” Kai Apo, one of the team’s top offensive contributors, was scoreless until late in the fourth quarter and ended the game with only 2 points. Tyler Frieze scored 24 of Creswell’s 36 points. Defensively the Bulldogs held Sutherlin to 39 points and Mason Gill scored 18 points, below Thomas’ goal of holding him to 20-25 points. ”We had a few defensive breakdowns in the fourth quarter, which eventually put us in a situation where we had to foul on a few possessions,” Thomas said.
REFLECTIONS: ”Sutherlin did a good job executing. They’re methodical and really disciplined, which played a huge part in why we couldn’t get in our flow, couldn’t get into transition and that really affected us offensively,” Thomas said.
RESULT: CHS won in double overtime 82-76 at Oakland on Friday, Dec. 20.
RESULT: CHS dominated Douglas 86-44 on Saturday, Dec. 21
RECAP: After Friday night’s eventful victory, the Bulldogs traveled to Douglas, and found themselves in a dog fight for the first quarter. Creswell was up 15-13, as the team struggled against Douglas’ 1-3-1 defensive scheme. ”Douglas runs a 1-3-1 with high pressure and lots of trapping. We hadn’t faced one of those live yet this year so it took us the first eight minutes to figure out what was going on and how we were going to overcome it,” Thomas said. The Bulldogs indeed did solve it, and led 40-24 at halftime. ”You guys have found what’s working and you need to exploit it,” Thomas told the players at halftime.
Scoring leaders for the Bulldogs included: Frieze, 22 points and 5 rebounds; Apo, 15 points and 4 rebounds; and Dallton Dewey, 13 points and had 4 steals.
REFLECTIONS: Thomas said: ”Overall Douglas was a fun game. After being sick and then playing on the road, it made for a long week so it was nice to be able to overcome the Sutherlin loss with two really solid victories. It’s definitely how you want to go into Christmas break with high morale so they can feel good about taking a few days off and healing up.”
