Cottage Grove has a long list of unique restaurants, and this past spring, it welcomed another into its delicious family. Pig & Turnip, owned by Natalie and Joe Shield, found a new home in Cottage Grove in April 2018. This German-inspired cafe has made an impression in Springfield, and it now offers its distinct menu to residents of Southern Lane County.
The Shields first started Pig & Turnip in Oct. 2015 in Eugene, operating out of a mobile food cart. After receiving positive feedback from their customers, the Shields took the next step by opening a cafe in Springfield in Feb. 2016.
The Pig & Turnip menu features homemade meats and bread, German pork dishes, a variety of fries, burgers, signature soups and salads, drinks, desserts and other delicious items. All pork products come from Carlton Farms and the burgers feature 100% grass-fed beef from locally raised cattle. Bread, buns and pretzels are handmade on-site or acquired from Reality Kitchen, a non-profit organization in Eugene. Ample vegetarian and gluten-free options are available, and Pig & Turnip even features a separate gluten-free fryer. Most menu items are collaborations between Manager and Head Chef Owen Griffin and Natalie Shield’s culinary expertise.
Pig & Turnip features daily events and specials at both locations. On ”Throwback Tuesday,” oldies play throughout the day and seniors receive a $1 discount. On Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. in Cottage Grove, Burger & Brew features a burger, fries and a bottle of beer for $12. Cottage Grove features ”Thirsty Thursday,” a special which features $1 off alcoholic beverages, while Springfield features $10 burgers and fries. Come ”Fry-Day,” Pig & Turnip features $1 off traditional fries and $2 off specialty fries. ”Schnitzel Saturday” features $1 off all schnitzel orders. On Aug. 3, Pig & Turnip will also celebrate National Mustard Day with their homemade mustard concoctions.
Pig & Turnip in Cottage Grove features a variety of locally brewed beers, artisan drinks, Coca-Cola products and Virgil’s Root Beer floats. Plenty of Indoor and outdoor seating options are available at both locations.
Besides the typical dining experience, Pig & Turnip offers catering services. Free in-town delivery is available on orders $200 or more, and customers have a variety of entrees, sides and desserts to choose from.
With all the restaurant chains out there these days, it’s easy to get lost in the drab, the mundane and the mediocre. Local restaurants not only make dining out an exciting experience, it also keeps dollars in the local communities.
