Superheroes support fight against cancer

Not all heroes wear capes; in fact, a lot them don’t. It’s the brave women and men we see every day who truly make the difference: those who dress up in suits, uniforms, khakis, sneakers, scrubs and other unassuming attire.
On Tuesday, June 26, Amber Fortner and her friends, Wonder Woman, Superman, Spiderman, Batgirl, Rocket the Racoon and Groot spent the afternoon outside Creswell’s Bi-Mart to support the fight against cancer. Together, they passed out buttons and home-made coloring books, and posed with children to raise funds for Relay For Life.
Fortner is part of the Bi-Mart Relay For Life Team and, with the help of her coworkers, has organized numerous fundraisers. Fortner has been participating in Relay For Life events since she was a child and has raised money toward helping others. Between employee bake sales, gathering funds to wear jeans to work and her superhero pals, Fortner has raised nearly $500 for Relay For Life this year.
Fortner and her friends live in Creswell, Eugene and Dexter and are no strangers to these events. Several of these masked heroes even visit sick children at Sacred Heart Medical Center.
”It gives them a break and allows them to focus on something besides why they’re in the hospital,” Batgirl said, donning her homemade costume.
Much like true superheroes, these individuals wished to remain anonymous.
The next local Relay For Life event will take place at PK Park in Eugene on July 20 and 21, and is a 24-Hour Cancer Walk. For more information about Relay For Life, how to donate or to participate in local Relay For Life events, visit
It doesn’t take a superhero to fight for good, just someone with a little extra time, energy and compassion. Help others by finding the superhero inside yourself.
