Creswell School District teachers and staff rushed to the May 12 school board meeting after the Creswell Middle School track meet to discuss recent academic updates for graduation, new outdoor lunchtime protocols, prom and back-to-school plans for the fall.

“We’re planning for Creswell to start out the upcoming school year with a full-time school schedule running right at it,” said superintendent Mike Johnson.

In the meantime, high school graduation is scheduled for the CHS football field. Rented canvases will provide coverage for rain or shade for sun.

Maintaining social distancing during meal times had been a concern as more students returned to in-person learning. CSD officials said the outdoor cafeteria has been going well at all three schools.

Creslane principal Amy Halley said the extended onsite learning hours “brought new life again to the building.”

Said Julie Johansen, Creswell Middle school principal: “I think we should start taking a count on how many times we have to remind kids to socially distance during recess. Other than that, they are doing an impeccable job moving classes and using sign-out sheets.”

Johansen said CMS is planning for incoming Creslane sixth-graders and attempting a yearbook for eighth-graders.

CHS principal Jenny Collins said prom is happening, and she’s buying hula hoops to spread over the dance floor. “Then they have to dance and socially distance in their hula hoop. They think I’m kidding,” Collins said. Senior award nights will be held June 3.
