Adopt-A-Highway Work Party at the Big Milkweed Patch
As you may know, our club has adopted the highway stretch which contains the largest known patch of native Showy Milkweed in Lane County. We are picking up litter along this stretch of highway in Springfield on weekends 3 times per year so that we can monitor the milkweed patch and make sure that ODOT is using an appropriate mowing schedule which controls invasive weeds but still allows the milkweeds to grow and set seed. We will also look for monarchs and their eggs, larvae, and pupae. It is illegal for anyone to stop on this section of highway unless you are part of an Adopt-a-Highway crew.
Our next work party is Sunday, June 15 from 10-12. This is the only work party we are planning this year that is during the time when Monarchs might be there or when we might find their eggs or caterpillars (we found two adults there last year). If you are interested in helping and have not already signed up, please fill out our contact form on our website.
