SPRINGFIELD – Mayor Sean VanGordon will speak on the city’s fiscal future July 22 as part of a roundtable with the Springfield Chamber of Commerce.
The discussion will take place from 4-5 p.m. at the Chamber Depot, 101 S. A St., and will center around the city’s fiscal stability strategy and how it shapes the future of Springfield’s business climate. VanGordon will share the recommendations of the City’s Fiscal Stability Task Force.
The Chamber helped represent the business community in Task Force process.
The report outlines nine recommendations designed to help close the City’s projected General Fund deficit:
- Reduce Library budget by $500,000.
- Implement a shared employee and employer payroll tax to generate approximately $2,300,000.
- Adjust Police and Fire safety levies to reflect full-service costs, generating approximately $1,300,000.
- Implement traffic cameras; direct net revenue toward public safety needs.
- Reduce SPD overtime.
- Review City-owned properties for potential sale or development.
- Development opportunities in the Gateway employment area.
- Implement a business retention and expansion strategy.
- Support efforts to modernize Oregon’s local revenue system.
