SPRINGFIELD – On Feb. 13, Lane County Circuit Court Judge Debra K. Vogt sentenced Isaac Henry McGrew to 25 years in prison and 36 months of post-prison supervision for the killing of Dustin Lee Shelton on Sept. 28, 2023.
In mid-2023, McGrew was angry that his ex-girlfriend was spending time with Shelton. McGrew sent numerous unanswered text messages to his ex-girlfriend expressing anger and frustration.
Around 2 a.m. on Sept. 28, 2023, McGrew located them near the St. Vincent de Paul on Main Street in Springfield. He got out of his van and shot a crossbow at Shelton, striking him in the forehead. The crossbow bolt had Shelton’s first name handwritten on the fletching, with an arrow pointing toward the tip.
McGrew then turned the crossbow on his ex-girlfriend and ordered her into the van. As they drove, he tried to convince her to come with him to California, but she convinced him to let her go. He fled to a family member’s home in California, where he was found and arrested.
Shelton died at the hospital several hours after the shooting.
McGrew was charged with murder in the first degree, kidnapping in the second degree, and tampering with a witness. Pursuant to negotiations, he pled guilty to manslaughter in the first degree, kidnapping in the second degree, and tampering with a witness.
Detective Branden Sink with the Springfield Police Department was the primary investigator. Senior Prosecutor Spencer Gwartney prosecuted the case.
