More local athletes compete for Youth Athlete of the Year

William Silva

Creswell resident William Silva, an 11-year-old 1st-degree Black Belt with Rogers Family Martial Arts in Cottage Grove, is competing for the award. He was named the American Taekwondo Association’s (ATA) Athlete of the Week earlier in May.

Dedicated to his training, William practices at the Rogers Martial Arts dojang at least three times a week, in addition to training at home and during private lessons.

He is also known for his willingness to assist fellow students, having served as an assistant in the ATA Tiger (4-7 year old) ring at tournaments and as an honorary guest judge at Rogers ATA’s most recent testing.

Treyson Hill

Thurston’s Treyson Hill is competing as a Colts basketball player. He loves “playing sports because he enjoys the competition and the challenge it brings. It pushes me to improve and stay focused.”

Last season, he scored the game-winning shot in one of the Colts’ state playoff games and led the team to its 6th-place finish at state.

He looks up to Stephen Curry and Kobe Bryant, “not just for their talent and work ethic, but for how they give back and use their platform to make a difference.”

Dakota Hansen

Thurston’s Dakota Hansen in boys’ soccer competes for the title. The rising junior made the varsity team as a freshman. Last year, he played as a defender
