Sports notebook: Sports are atop summer camp activities

As the school year closes, many local high school teams are opening annual summer camps, local clinics and training opportunities for the summer.

Cottage Grove boys and girls soccer will be hosting its Nine to Five Soccer Camp June 16-19, led by Cottage Grove boys coach Jaime Urenda and girls coach Sarah Leonard, among others. The high school players from both teams will serve as camp counselors. Registration after May 16 for kindergarten to 5th grade will be $100, and 6th to 12th grade is $110. Kindergarten to 5th grade will be from  9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Grades 6th to 12th will be noon to 3 p.m. The camp is in memory of Brian Ray Walker, who played No. 9 on the boys team and Sumer Danielle Solesbee, who played No. 5 on the girls. Both players were killed in car crashes in the early 2000s. For more information, contact Urenda. There is a registration link on the Cottage Grove boys’ team website, cghsboyssoccer.

The Cottage Grove volleyball team will also be hosting its annual summer camp from July 23-25 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Boys and girls from 3rd to 9th grade are invited, and the cost is $35. Get registered at the team’s website, cghsvolleyball.com.

The cost is $35 per participant, and the participants will learn “cheer motions, jumps, chants, a dance, and basic tumbling and stunting” with a performance on the final day of camp. Registration is available online and any questions can be directed to cheer coach Bethany Scovil.

It’s open to incoming freshmen to outgoing senior boys and girls. Practice will start at 5:30 p.m. at the CHS track Monday through Thursday, up to 3-4 times a week. The “Junior Camp”  is for the incoming 7th, 8th, and 9th graders from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The program will foster basic skills, positions, teamwork, and provide the opportunity to play in a tournament. Cost is $45 per camper. All proceeds will go to the high school volleyball team. Contact coach Anna Baltrusch for more information.

Pleasant Hill opens a youth wrestling camp June 16-19. The camp will take ages 5-14 at $40 per participant. The program aims to “learn the fundamentals of wrestling, enhance skills, and create good memories with friends.”
