Spring sports recaps: May 1

RECAPS

COTTAGE GROVE went 0-3 last week against Marshfield and goes into the third week of Sky-Em league with a 0-6 record. It started with their 13-3 loss on Tuesday when the Pirates scored nine runs from the second to the fourth innings. A standout was Landon Vaughn, who went 2-for-3 with 1 run and an RBI. Then on Friday, the Lions lost both games in their doubleheader. In Game One, the Lions were no-hit in a 7-0 loss. In Game Two, the Lions lost 8-0, but recorded five hits.

CRESWELL went 1-2 last week, beating the La Pine Hawks 7-3 on Tuesday but then dropping both games in their doubleheader against the Sisters Outlaws on Friday. Against the Hawks, the Bulldogs won thanks to four runs from the second to the third innings. Deacon Edwards went 3-for-4 with 2 runs and Jaxon Pelham went 2-for-3 with 2 runs; he also struck out five on the mound. On Friday, the Bulldogs lost 2-0 when the Outlaws scored two runs in the top of the third inning. The Bulldogs recorded only two hits overall. The Outlaws won Game Two 1-0.

PLEASANT HILL went 2-2 last week. It started by dominating Harrisburg 22-2 on Tuesday when the Billies scored a run in every inning before calling off the game at the fifth inning for the mercy rule. Kaden Fisher and Wylie Blake both went 2-for-2 with a run and 2 RBIs. Will Sheva went 2-for-3 with 4 runs and 2 RBIs. Caleb Van Ordstrand earned four total runs for the Billies. The Billies won 14-2 in an out-of-league game on Wednesday thanks to an explosive five runs in the top of the first inning. Fisher went 4-for-3 with 5 RBIs and Judah Kelso went 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs. Van Ordstrand and Landon Kelley combined for 6 runs for the Billies. On Friday, the Billies lost to the La Pine Hawks in their doubleheader. In Game One, the Billies recorded only one hit in the 10-0 loss. In Game Two, the Billies went scoreless when Hawks pitcher Elijah Sparrow struck out 12 Billies in a 4-0 loss.

SPRINGFIELD went 1-2 last week against the Ashland Grizzlies when the Grizzlies forfeited their first game on Tuesday. In their doubleheader on Saturday, Jack Sperry earned the only run for the Millers in the top of the third in their 4-1 loss. Clay Rhoades went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Springfield. In Game Two, the Millers lost 11-1. Dylan Leas recorded the only run for the Millers and Trevin Moore went 2-for-3 as the Millers gathered 10 total hits.

THURSTON went 3-0 against Eagle Point last week to remain undefeated in the Midwestern League. In their 9-7 win on Tuesday, the Colts exploded with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning after a slow start. Connor Molony went 3-for-4 with 1 run and 1 RBI. David Macdonald went 2-for-3 with 2 runs and 1 RBI. On the mound, Grady Saunders struck out 11 and walked four. In their 8-0 win in Game One on Saturday, Saunders went 2-for-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs and pitcher Kyle Miller struck out four. In Game Two, the Colts won 1-0, earning their only run in the top of the ninth inning. Miller went 2-for-3 and Macdonald scored the Colts’ run. Collin Hernandez struck out 8, allowed 3 hits and walked 2 batters.

 #27 COTTAGE GROVE (6-11)

Leading off: The Lions begin their third week of Sky-Em League play with Marist Catholic this week, most notably, with a doubleheader at Marist on Friday. The Lions have an 0-6 league record. Meanwhile, the No. 1-ranked Spartans are leading Class 4A with an 11-2 record. The Lions hope to rely on their defense; pitcher Nolan Spear will be on the mound.

#22 CRESWELL (8-9)

Leading off: The Bulldogs play at Harrisburg in a doubleheader Friday. After already beating the 31st-ranked Falcons 13-1 earlier in league play, the Bulldogs are heavy favorites. Don’t miss Deacon Edwards, who went 3-for-4 with two runs against La Pine last week, as well as Jaxon Pelham, who went 2-for-3 with two runs against the Hawks. 

#17 PLEASANT HILL (8-8)

Leading off: The Billies play host to Elmira in a doubleheader Friday. The Billies dominated No. 24 Elmira 13-3 earlier in the season under new head coach Boone Casarez. Look for Kaden Fisher and Wylie Blake, who both went 2-for-2 with a run and two RBIs against Harrisburg last week.

#30 SPRINGFIELD (3-11)

Leading off: The Millers head to Churchill this Thursday for a Midwestern League doubleheader. The Lancers have also been struggling in league play with a 2-7 record. This may be the chance for the Millers to get another win under new coach Kyle Casperson in this building season. 

#1 THURSTON (15-2)

■ Leading off: The Colts hit the road to Crater on Saturday for a doubleheader. The Comets should prove to be a solid test for Thurston. Crater is No. 9 in Class 5A overall with a 5-1 record in Midwestern League thus far; they trail only the Colts in league standings. If the Colts are to sustain their winning momentum, they will have to avoid complacency, as head coach Dennis Minium has said.

CRESWELL went 1-2 in the Mountain Valley Conference last week, losing to the La Pine Hawks 18-17, then swept their doubleheader against Sisters. Against the Hawks, senior Kaylee Waller went 5-for-6 with 4 runs and 8 RBIs. Savannah Rook went 4-for-6 with 4 runs and 1 RBI. On the mound, Waller and Elise Thackara combined to strike out seven. In Game One against the Outlaws, Waller went 2-for-3 with 2 runs and 4 RBIs and Thackara struck out 6 and allowed 11 hits on the mound. The Bulldogs took the win 9-7. In Game Two, Waller and Jordynn Marklin combined for four runs for the Bulldogs and led Creswell to a 9-5 win. Waller struck out 5 and walked 4.

PLEASANT HILL improved its record last week by sweeping a doubleheader against No. 39 La Pine. The week started, however, with a 14-2 loss to Harrisburg / Monroe on Wednesday. Alexis Pardee went 2-for-3 with Erin McAllister and Genna Sheava scoring the 2 runs for the Billies. In Game One against the Hawks, Acadia Bloxman went 3-for-4 with 4 runs and 1 RBI. Reagan Dockery went 2-for-3 with 1 run and 1 RBI. Bloxman and Kendall Carey combined for 9 strikeouts on the mound. The Billies took a 10-5 victory. In Game Two, Bloxman went 3-for-5 with 1 run and 3 RBIs. Carey recorded 7 strikeouts as the Billies earned the 11-7 win.

SPRINGFIELD was 0-3 against the Ashland Grizzlies last week and heads into the third week of the Midwestern League with a 0-6 record. In their 15-3 loss on Tuesday, the Millers recorded 3 hits combined by the efforts of Lillian Wobbe, Chloe Sankey, and Nadia Plumb. Sankey and Wobbe also combined for 6 strikeouts on the mound. In Game One of their doubleheader, the Millers lost 10-0 with three hits. In Game Two, the Millers lost 10-4, with Wobbe, Sankey, Anna San Filippo, and Ella Patrick combining for 4 runs.

THURSTON went 2-1 with Eagle Point last week. It started with a 15-7 loss on Tuesday when the Eagles racked up 8 runs in the top of the fifth inning. Rosie Montes went 3-for-4 with 1 run and Kassy Anderson was 2-for-2 with 2 runs in the loss. In Game One, the Colts lost 9-8, but collected 8 hits. In Game Two, the Colts redeemed themselves with a 17-7 win when they scored 9 runs in the top of the fourth inning. Anderson went 3-for-5 with 3 runs and 8 RBIs. Payton Tovey went 3-for-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs.

#16 COTTAGE GROVE (8-6)

Leading off: The Lions head to Marist Catholic this Friday for a doubleheader. Though the Spartans trail the Lions in league standings, they have also had a later start to Sky-Em play. They are ranked higher in Class 4A at No. 13. Look for Emily Pacheco, who went 3-for-3 with three RBIs against Marshfield last week.

#26 CRESWELL (8-6)

Leading off: The Bulldogs head to No. 12 Harrisburg / Monroe on Friday for a Mountain Valley Conference doubleheader. The Bulldogs lost to the Eagles 15-1 earlier in the season, but this might be a good opportunity for the Bulldogs. Look for senior standout Kaylee Waller, who went 5-for-6 with four runs and eight RBIs against La Pine last week. Also, look for Savannah Rook, who went 4-for-6.  

#29 PLEASANT HILL (3-10)

Leading off: The Billies hit the road to Elmira / Mapleton on Friday for a doubleheader on the Falcons’ field. The Billies lost to the Falcons 14-2 earlier this season. If the Billies want to compete in this rematch, they’ll need standouts Acadia Bloxman, Erin McAllister, and pitcher Kendall Carey.

#30 SPRINGFIELD (4-11)

Leading off: The Millers get packing to Churchill on Friday for a Midwestern League doubleheader. Though the Millers have struggled in league thus far, the Lancers aren’t too far behind with 2-7 record in league. This might be a good opportunity for the Millers to improve their record. Look for the efforts of Lillian Wobbe, Chloe Sankey, and Nadia Plumb

#2 THURSTON (12-4)

Leading off: The Colts head to Crater for a doubleheader this Saturday. No. 3 Crater is right behind the Colts in the Midwestern League standings. Look for the play of Kassy Anderson, Rosie Montes, and Payton Tovey

COTTAGE GROVE boys finished ninth while the girls were 29th at the Meet of Champions 4A-1A last Saturday – an event with 47 teams. Micah Hanke took first in the 800-meter dash. His time of 1:59 placed him No. 4 in Class 4A. Carter Bengtson was second in the 3000 meters, where the top two finishers ran faster than the previous meet record. Bengtson is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A in the 1500 meters and the 3000 meters. Makya Alsup and Carly Knutson were the top finishers for the girls, earning 6th in the javelin and 7th in the 800 meters. Alsup is ranked 4th in javelin in Class 4A.

PLEASANT HILL girls placed 24th at the Meet of Champions 4A-1A. Soleis Jones placed third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00. The 4×100 relay team of Jones, Ellie Thebo, Isabel Hammond-Mendez, and Jolie Heacock finished sixth. Cody Jones was 11th in the javelin.

CRESWELL girls won first in the Aaron and Marie Jones Invitational AMJ Invite on Saturday; the boys took 7th. Notable performances on the girls team were Journey Meyer, who took first in the 200-meter dash with a PR of 26.13, and Jordyn Lee, who finished second with a season record of 26.83. Meyer also took first in the 400 meters with another PR of 59.75. Kylie Leonard was second with a season-best 1:01, and Lee was third at 1:02. Leonard also took second in the 400-meter hurdles at 49.85 and first in the steeplechase with a PR of 9:15. Lee took second with a PR of 9:20. Aaliyah Reed was second in the shot put. Leonard was second in the high jump. Kiannah Bailey was first in the long jump and triple jump. Standouts on the boys side were Connor Nguyen, who took first and second in the 100- and 200-meter dash. Lincoln Criddle took second in the 3000 meters. Caleb Lybarger was first in the discus and Lance Risdal first in javelin.

SPRINGFIELD boys took fourth while the girls finished third in the 5A-2 Midwestern League Pre-District Meet last weekend. On the boys side, notable performances were Hayden Sayre, who was second in the 400 meters with a PR of 52.71. Brylen Sanders was third in the 3000 meters at 10:07. Jack Sayre was third in the 110 meters at 17.93. Lachlan Vaught was third in the javelin, and Amar’e Viquelia earned third in the long jump. On the girls’ side, senior Audrey Sommerville won first in the 400 meters with a PR of 1:02. Bella Wells took first in the 800 meters with a PR of 2:31. Liberty Smith earned third in the 300-meter hurdles with a PR of 56.07. Sailor Hall earned first in the discus and shotput with a PR in shotput. Leila Kammerzelt-Murphy took second in the dicus. Natalie Bell placed first in the pole vault.

THURSTON girls earned first while the boys took third in the 5A-2 Midwestern League Pre-District Meet. On the girls’ side, Emmie Gerdrum won first in the 100-meter dash with a PR of 12.93. Jenni Newell took third with a PR of 27.22 in the 200-meter dash. Genevieve Woodward earned first with a PR of 1:04.43, and Nyah Marchant took third with a PR of 1:06.05. Liliana Ramirez was third in the 1500 meters. Nathalie Parker earned first place while Marchant took second in the 3000 meters; both athletes earned a PR. Kelsie Raven took first in the 100-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. Macy Taylor was second in the 100-meter hurdles, and Taylor Suiter took second in the 200-meter hurdles. The relay team of Gerdrum, Taylor, Addison Nelson, and Brooklyn Anderson took first in the 4×100-meter relays for a combined time of 50.52. The relay team of Gerdrum, Suiter, Emma Smith, and Ashtyn Bellmore took first in the 4×400 meter relay at 4:23. In the field events, Raven won first in high jump and Nelson second. Anderson earned first in the long jump and Nelson second in the triple jump.
