Matt Hartner Memorial Volleyball Classic gets underway Friday

SPRINGFIELD – One of the region’s premier MLK weekend club tournaments – the Matt Hartner Memorial Volleyball Classic –  kicks off this weekend in Springfield and Eugene after the ice storm canceled last year’s event.

The event has featured up to 264 high school teams from Washington, Oregon, Canada, Idaho, Montana, California, Alaska, Puerto Rico and Hawaii all playing in the University of Oregon’s Moshofsky Sports Center, Mac Court, and Springfield’s Bob Keefer – marking a total of 32 courts. This year, only 128 teams were permitted due to the loss of the Moshofsky Sports Center due to construction. The 2025 event will feature: 64 18- and 17-under teams, and 64  16U and 15U teams. The schedule will be posted Tuesday evening the week of the tournament.

The event organizers will have a presale for event wristbands the Friday night before the start of the event at Mac Court in Eugene from 5-9 p.m. Sale of wristbands will be available every day of the event at each playing site, though. Admission sales for three and two-day passes are $20. A one-day pass is $10. Kids under 16, team-registered club directors, coaches and players enter for free. This event will also have recruiters and college coaches in attendance. The cost per coach is $10.

Formerly known as the Oregon MLK Classic, Matt Hartner founded the tournament in 2010. In 2015, the tournament was renamed in his honor after his passing. He played on the Oregon Men’s club volleyball team from 2002-10.
