Football

Creswell Bulldogs 20, Madras Bisons 6

RECAP: The Bulldogs won a confidence-boosting blowout. Senior QB Darien Dewey connected with junior Hunter Mustin for a 32-yard TD and an extra point in the first quarter. Mustin ran a 71-yard score in the second quarter, and Creswell led 14-0.  He also returned a fumble recovery 54 yards for a touchdown. Mustin rushed for 18 times and 100 yards overall. 

Elmira 48, Pleasant Hill 13

RECAP: The Billies lost a tough game against Elmira. The Billies defense forced and recovered two fumbles caused by Kaden Fisher and Jacob Neely. The Billies offense was once again led by the rushing attack of Kai Davis and Kaden Howes, QB Steven Bounds, and leading receiver Neely.

Willamette Wolverines 49, Springfield Millers 14

RECAP: The Wolverines led 49-0 in the fourth quarter when the Millers’ offense got going. QB Noah Solo and Clay Rhoades both scored fourth-quarter TDs and junior Brady Lo’sers made the extra points to reach the final score. Solo finished with 17 carries for 52 yards. 

Volleyball 

Pleasant Hill hosted the Pleasant Hill Invitational last week and swept the entire tournament. Bracket play wins over Marshfield 2-1 and Burns in the championship 2-0. Pool play wins were versus Cottage Grove and Lakeview. Overall stats on the day from pool play and bracket play are, senior setter Claire Crawford with 28 kills, 89 assists, 44 digs, 9 aces, 3 blocks; senior middle Ruby Jackson with 40 kills, 4 aces, 3 blocks; Senior outside Cheyenne Green with 29 kills, 28 digs, 4 blocks; Senior opposite Trinity Hawkins with 18 kills; Senior middle Sydney Brink with 18 kills, 3 blocks; and Senior libero Emily Krauss with 46 digs, 21 assists, 2 kills

■  Creswell traveled to Elmira last Thursday and won in 3 sets of 25-17, 25-21, 26-24. Leaders for Creswell were Piper Hanson with 20 kills and 17 digs; Teighlor Nunez with 4 Aces and 33 assists; and Marley Query with 7 kills and 1 stuffed block.

■  Churchill swept Springfield on Monday 3-0.

Girls Soccer

■  Cottage Grove tied 1-1 with Marshfield last Thursday at the Pirates home turf. The Lions maintained their composure and executed effective triangle passes throughout the game. They had a standout shot by sophomore midfielder Autumn Leach. Collectively, the Lions took 20 shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Tayler Bentley made 8 saves, and junior defender Shelby Hughart contributed with 5 crucial defensive stops. 

Cottage Grove handled Suislaw on Monday night 3-0. Head coach Dan Smathers remarked that it was a “great effort from the entire team, they really played well.” 2 goals and 1 assist from Mila Nguyen and 1 goal and 1 assist from Elliette Kinney.

Thurston lost 2-1 against the Carter Comets last Saturday. Maycee Samuelson scored midway through the 1st half on a 1-on-1 with Thurston goalkeeper Gaby Montes. The Colts found the back of the net when Taylor Suiter played the ball to Macy Taylor and Taylor placed the ball in the corner of the goal. A marking error in the last 3 minutes, led to Samuelson scoring the game-winner for Crater.

Boys Soccer

Cottage Grove swept Marshfield 4-1 last Thursday at the Pirates home turf. The Pirates initially gained an early goal from a free kick. Later, junior midfielder Emmanuel Rea scored a goal off a rebound from the keeper to tie it up. Then, before the end of the first half, senior midfielder Rogelio Soto-Cruz got the ball on the 20-yard line and took a shot, making it far post to take the lead. Then, forward senior Hayes Valley got a third goal to assist from freshman defender Jude Chrestman. The final goal was in the last few minutes of the game when Rea assisted Soto-Cruz off a cross and put the ball in the goal.

Creswell won 4-0 against Siuslaw / Mapleton Vikings on Monday.

Pleasant Hill lost against the Suislaw / Mapleton Viking last Wednesday. 

Cross Country

■ Cottage Grove: The boys captured second place by edging the third-ranked state team, Philomath, in the Woahink Lake XC Invitational last weekend. Carter Bengston keeps getting faster, as he ran won by 57 seconds–recording the fastest time on the Woahink course in 13 years. David Culbert finished in the top-10 for the boys with Frank Garcia, Easton Hutchins and Jennings Albrecht close behind to round out the scoring five. The girls’ team was missing four of the top seven runners this week due to illness and injuries. However, Lion standout Ella Cardwell displayed her talent in the front of the pack for a second-place finish. Following was Hailey Fergason, who placed 11th and ran 29 seconds faster than she did on the same course last year. Overall, the girls took 4th.

Creswell’s JV boys placed 4th overall in the 5000 meters at Woahink Lake XC Invitational last weekend with Lincoln Criddle placing 4th at 20:28 and Ben Shaw placing 8th at 20:50. For the girl’s team in the combined JV and Varsity 5000 meters, Kylie Leonard had the fastest time of 24:43. 

Pleasant Hill varsity boys took 5th overall in the  5000 meters at Woahink Lake XC Invitational last weekend with the fatest runner Gage Roper placing 11th overall with 18:06. The girls took 2nd overall with Nellie Smith placing 6th at 22:06 and Annaleigh Epperson 9th at 22:32.

Springfield: Audrey Sommerville and Ellen Auxier led the way for the girl’s team with PRs in their 5k race at the Harrier Classic. Sommerville’s time of 20:21 is the fastest of all Millers this season.  For the boys, freshman Adrian Estes again led the way with a 16:45 PR. Junior Bryten Kelly broke the 18-minute barrier for the first time in the season with a 17:38 lifetime best.  

Thurston: “This was the best performance that I have seen from both Colt teams since I started coaching here,” said head coach Devin Vanscoy about the Harrier Classic last weekend. Overall 12 runners had lifetime PR’s and one season’s best. On the boys’ side, Carson Buergey broke the school’s 44-year-old school record by 15 seconds, with a time of 15:30, and placed 4th overall. Owen Smith also ran a spectacular race running a time of 16:35, which was good enough for 22nd overall and the 25th fastest time in school history.  On the girl’s side, Ashley Wadley had the biggest PR with 106 seconds and broke 24 minutes, which has been a consistent varsity time for the Colts in years past. Emma Smith also PR’d at 23:30. Finally, Nathalie Parker took off 69 seconds from her previous PR from last week breaking 22 minutes! She is now the 38th fastest girl in Colts history.
