Springfield celebrates with a cruise

A variety of cars and trucks begin the trek to Albany behind the lead car, a classic Camaro.

People drove from all over the state to attend the first Oregon Performance Cruise. It began at the Old Symantec building, now Pacific Source, at 555 International Way in Springfield.

Gary Compton, 58, of Junction City was involved in planning the cruise.

“It was a last-minute thing,” he said. “We went through a lot of red tape. I’ve talked to people from the coast, they drove from all over just to come here. And they said, because it’s the right thing to do on the 4th of July.”

Sun Automotive, Springfield Cruise, and Function 4 Junction were sponsors.

Nick Boyles, 53, of Eugene said he built his car, and it was the car’s first time on the freeway. He learned about cars from his dad growing up.

Don Hershfelt (left), 68, and Randy Leach, 66, pose with their cars Saturday. They say they’ve been buying the same ’69 Nova back and forth between them for over 15 years. Hershfelt has had his ‘69 Camaro for six years. “I graduated in 1970, I grew up with these cars. I’ve always had them. I could get $40,000 out of it,” he said. Leach offered him $12,000 and a ride home for it.
