• The 800- and 1500-meter races have been part of the Olympics for men since the first modern games in 1896. For women, owing to prejudices about women competing in longer events, the 800 did not appear until 1928. It was then dropped until 1960; it has been around ever since. The women’s 1500 debuted in 1972.
• While the mile does not appear in the Olympics, it is still important. In 2019, Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands ran the fastest mile by a woman in 4:12.33. The fastest mile ever, 3:43.13 was by Hicham El Guerrouj in ’99.
The 1500-meter race, at 4,921 feet (359 feet shorter than the mile), will be one of the more anticipated races at the Olympic Trials and at the Tokyo Olympics.
