Area business owners are stepping up to show support for local law enforcement during National Police Week.
Members of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce are engaging in two separate efforts to demonstrate their appreciation for Springfield Police, Lane County Sheriff’s Office and the Oregon State Police.
Throughout the week, businesses will be delivering snacks to the agencies during their shift changes, of which there are 50, beginning at 5:45 in the morning and extending into the evening. Included with the snacks will be messages of support by those local businesses.
The goal of this effort is to ensure that every law enforcement officer in the region gets the message that they are appreciated and remembered, especially this week, a Chamber spokesperson said.
The second program occurs Thursday morning at Springfield Greeters’ Honoring Our Thin Blue Line recognition ceremony. Building off last year’s program, Honoring Our Thin Blue Line recognizes the dedication of the local law enforcement agencies and individually awards one representative from each ”based upon the criteria of demonstrating positive and proactive policing, being a person of impeccable character both personally and professionally, and also showing a commitment to community involvement through volunteerism.”
