Senior Meals Program celebrates GivingTuesday

LCOG Senior & Disability Services has joined GivingTuesday to support the Senior Meals Program which serves an average of 129,000 hot nutrition meals to 1,200 older Lane County neighbors every year. Some people receive Meals on Wheels delivered to their home and others go to one of  its 10 Café 60 locations.

The program has been on hiatus for the past three years and have recently reopened. Creswell reopened in September and operates Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 11 a.m. at Cresview Villa at 350 S. 2nd St.  Cottage Grove also reopened in Septebmer and operates on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at 700 E. Biggs Ave.

Both Café 60 and Meals on Wheels help older neighbors face the challenges of aging, isolation, and lost mobility, allowing them to stay in the communities where they have established roots and feel more vibrant as their lives progress. Most of its participants live on low, fixed incomes

Community members are encouraged to make a tax-deductible contribution to the Senior Meals Program to help ensure that nourishing meals can be served to our older neighbors who need them.

• $10 supplements a senior’s own meal contribution

• $50 provides one week of meals to a senior

• $100 provides two weeks of meals to a senior

• $250 provides one month of meals to a senior

• $1,500 feeds a senior for six months

• $3,000 feeds a senior for an entire year

On Nov. 28, there will be two ways to give to the Senior Meals Program:

How to visit a pantry
• All pantries are accessible for all Lane County residents. You do not need to visit the pantry closest to your home if the operating days or hours of a different pantry are better for you.
•  Make sure you income-qualify: To visit a pantry, your household income must be below 300% of the federal poverty level.
• You will not need to show any identification or documentation of access food from a Lane County pantry.
• Bring boxes or bags: Please bring enough bags or boxes to take your food with you. You will be able to receive up to a 3-5 day supply of food for your household.
• You may have to wait: Sometimes lines can be long.
•  Around major holidays, call ahead to confirm hours.
• You are welcome to get involved: Many pantries would love help. Ask personnel if they are looking for volunteers.

Of note: FOOD For LC does not distribute holiday food boxes

However, 211 will connect you to a variety of resources, including food. They are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
