HSSZ: Weekly Recaps

SOFTBALL

Cottage Grove: Cottage Grove went 2-2 in a busy week, beating Springfield 30-9 and Douglas 12-2 before losing 15-0 to both Astoria and Seaside at the Hidden Valley Spring Break Tournament. In the Springfield win Freshman Jayda Bruner had 3 hits, 5 runs and 3 RBI’s, and Kylee Cordin finished with 3 hits, 4 runs and 6 RBI’s. Bruner led the way again in the Douglas win with 2 hits, 2 runs and 3 RBI’s, while Emily Pacheco pitched all six innings and had 15 K’s.

Creswell: Creswell had three games against Siuslaw, all wins. The Bulldogs won the first game 14-4 behind a 9-run first inning. Lauren Bailey led the way with 4 hits and 3 runs and Hope Ukolov struckout 13. The second matchup was much closer, but Creswell pulled it out 12-10 thanks to Bailey’s 4 RBI’s. Creswell dominated the final matchup 16-4 in five innings, with Ashelyn Sharkey getting 3 hits, 3 runs and 3 RBI’s.

Springfield: The Millers only game last week was a 30-9 loss against Class 4A No. 10 Cottage Grove. Jacey Smith had 1 hit, 1 run and 2 RBI’s for Springfield, and Holly Arendt scored twice.

Thurston: The Colts had three games last week. First was an 11-6 loss at No. 8 Wilsonville where Thurston was led by Syren Ferguson’s 3 hits, 2 runs and 1 RBI. Thurston then faced Class 6A No. 2 South Medford and Del Norte (CA) at the North Medford Tournament. The Colts fell 10-0 to SM before beating Del Norte 9-6 thanks to Ferguson’s 3 hits and 3 runs, as well as Gabriella Montes’ 3 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBI’s.

BASEBALL

Cottage Grove: The Lions went 1-1 last week, losing 9-5 to Scio before getting their first win of the season in a 14-5 win over Illinois Valley on Monday. Christian Spear led Cottage Grove against Scio with 2 hits and 3 runs. In the Illinois Valley win, Spear had a hit and 4 runs, Micah Spear had 3 hits, 3 runs and 2 RBI’s, and Isaiah Cushman had 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBI’s.

Creswell: The Bulldogs faced off against No. 17 Siuslaw three times last week, and fell each time. The first matchup was the closest, with Creswell leading 12-7 heading into the final inning. Siuslaw rattled off 6 runs though and snatched the victory. Coby Contreras had 2 hits and 4 RBI’s in the loss. Creswell then traveled to Siuslaw on Friday and lost a doubleheader 16-0 and 14-8. Jayden Kubishta led the Bulldogs in the final game with 2 hits, 2 runs and 3 RBI’s, while Evan Jenkins struckout 5 on the mound.

Pleasant Hill: The Billies had a Friday doubleheader against Harrisburg postponed due to weather, but they did beat Harrisburg 15-2 earlier in the week. Pleasant Hill had five players with multiple hits: Brasen Holliday had 2 hits and 2 runs; Hunter Allen had 2 hits, 2 runs and 3 RBI’s; Cam Griffiths had 2 hits and 3 runs; Kaden Fisher had 2 hits and 2 runs; and Blake Richardson had 2 hits and 4 RBI’s. Alejandro Ziolkowski allowed only 1 hit and struckout 7.

Thurston: The Colts lost 7-6 on a walk-off against Crescent Valley last Wednesday before heading to Arizona for their first game of the Coach Bob Invitational on Monday. Grady Saunders had 2 hits and a run, while Eli Crist had 1 hit, 2 runs and 2 RBI’s. Thurston’s first game in AZ was against Queen Creek (AZ), a 10-1 loss. Maddox Molony had 1 hit, 1 RBI and struckout 2 on the mound.

TRACK AND FIELD

  • Cottage Grove and Thurston both competed at the Cottage Grove Icebreaker last Thursday. First-place girls finishers for Thurston were: Kylie Jones 100m (13.34), Rainey Simmons 400m (1:09.04), Brooklyn Anderson 100m hurdles (19.12), Stella Hall shot put (31’0) and discus (100′ 4), Bailey Tovey javelin (106’2), Macy Taylor pole vault (6’0), and Savannah Efseaff long jump (14’4). On the boys side four athletes took first: Ammon Gallup 400m (55.07) and long jump (20’6), Nathan Glazier 800m (2:11.33), Taylor Carpenter high jump (5’4), and Ezekiel Planesi pole vault (6’0). Cottage Grove girls were led by Allison Palluck in first in the 1500 with a time of 5:20.95. The Lion boys were led by first-place finishers Brennen Murphy 200m (23.20), Jaden Owens 1500m (4:23.08), David Culbert 3000m (11:03.63), Tyler Russell 110m hurdles (16.76), Tyler Russell 300m hurdles (47.31), Elijah Williams shot put (47′ 0.25) and javelin (140′ 0), and Clayton Dewitt discus (115’8). Thurston won the girls team competition with 148 points and Cottage Grove won the boys team competition with 168 points.
  • Thurston then hosted nine schools, including Creswell and Springfield, on Saturday for the Harvey Lewellen Throws Invitational. On the boys side Thurston was led by Kylan Gray in 4th in discus (106’2) and 6th in javelin (125′ 10), as well as Zane Becker in 5th in the shot put (34’8). Creswell boys were led by Tayson Honer (33′ 1 shot put) and Caleb Lybarger (94′ 3 discus) both in 10th. Springfield boys were led by Lucas Paugh in 1st in javelin (158′ 10) and 4th in shot put (36′ 0). On the girls side, Springfield’s Kylie Rankins took home 1st in shot put (33′ 7) and discus (107′ 3) and 3rd in javelin (91′ 8). Thurston’s Bailey Tovey took 1st in javelin (119′ 7), 2nd in shot put (33′ 2), and 4th in discus (87′ 10). Creswell was led by Samairah Quinones in 2nd place in the javelin competition (94′ 0).
