February 2. Sports Notebook: SHS receiver commits to W. Oregon, Babe Ruth baseball

Springfield WR commits to Western Oregon

Dwayne Fotta, a senior WR for Springfield High School, announced his commitment to play next year at Western Oregon University. Fotta finished the regular season with 35 catches for 750 yards and 10 touchdowns. The touchdowns were third in the state and yards were seventh, both good enough to land Fotta on the second-team all-state on offense.

PDGA Masters in Eugene

The Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) announced that Eugene was awarded the bid to host the 2023 PDGA U.S. Masters Championships. The event will be held May 25-28 of this year and will include approximately 400-500 professional and amateur disc golfers.

OSAA Coaches Earn National Honors

Three Oregon High School coaches earned National Coach of the Year honors, given out by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches Association. Twenty-three high school coaches from across the country were selected as the 2021-22 honorees. Greg Grant, head football coach at Heppner High School, Kirsten Ruchaber, girls tennis at Jesuit High, and Pendleton dance coach Debbie Kishpaugh were the winners from Oregon.

OSAA seeks baseball, softball officials

The OSAA stated an immediate need for baseball and softball umpires for the upcoming season. “Oregon has an urgent need for officials in all sports,” said Jack Folliard, Executive Director of the Oregon Athletic Officials Association. “Officials provide valuable service to high schools and students, make a positive impact in the community and build relationships.” Those wishing to become an umpire can visit newofficials.org for more information.

SVA seeking items, officials

South Valley Athletics, a nonprofit youth sports organization located in Cottage Grove, is seeking any used sports attire for donation. SVA has a free sports closet that offers equipment to players who need it.

SVA is also seeking referees for youth basketball games. Middle & high school students and adults who understand basketball rules are invited to be referees and scorekeepers. Referees will be paid $15/game and scorekeepers $5/game. Games are on Saturday mornings from Jan. 21-March 11.

Babe Ruth registration dates

Oregon Babe Ruth Baseball, a youth baseball organization, has evaluation/sign-up dates for the Willamette Valley. Our area schools all host evaluation days as follows: Cottage Grove – Feb. 4, 5, 11 and 12; Creswell – Feb. 4 and 5; Springfield – Feb. 11; and Thurston – Feb. 4 and 5.
