Healthy eating made easy

June 20, 2019

Making healthy food choices can be challenging. The chaos of life almost always makes it easier to swing by a drive-thru. Not only is this typically an unhealthy option, but all that money spent on burgers and fries go to an out-of-state corporation. But in Lane County, fresh options that benefit your health and your community are plentiful.

The Food for Lane County Youth Farm is a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), a subscription program in which members regularly receive a package of fresh produce. It will also be setting up farm stands through Oct. 25. The Youth Farm hosts a farm stand at 311 Riverbend Drive from 2 to 6 p.m. on Thursdays. On Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., it will be at 705 Flamingo Ave. in Springfield. The Youth Farm accepts Oregon Trail and SNAP.

Good Food Easy delivers weekly CSAs to Creswell, Springfield and Eugene residents. With three box sizes, families can customize their shares to fit their needs. Every-other-week options are also available, and customers can skip weeks when needed.

A particularly unique feature of Good Food Easy, customers only pay for four weeks at a time, instead of paying for an entire season. They also send out weekly newsletters informing customers what to expect in their next share and offering cooking tips and recipes. Good Food Easy also has plans to open a stand at its farm on Weiss Road in Creswell.

The Farmer's Wife in Pleasant Hill offers also offers farm-fresh eggs, grass-fed beef, organic lamb and locally raised pork and chickens. Through July, The Farmer's Wife will feature potted plants for the living room, patio or porch. On Aug. 31, The Farmer's Wife will celebrate its one-year anniversary at its shop on Edenvale Road in Pleasant Hill.

If growing your own fruits and vegetables is more your style, Coast Fork Feed Store and Forest Floor Organic Soils are two options. Coast Fork Feed Store in Cottage Grove offers a large variety of vegetable bedding plants, bare-root plants and a full assortment of heirloom non-GMO produce.

In Creswell, Forest Floor Organic Soils features organic soils, compost, bark mulch, dirt and sod. Its nutrient-dense soils closely mimic the natural ecosystem of the Pacific Northwest.

Whether residents prefer to grow their own produce, explore the numerous stands or have produce delivered to their neighborhood, there's no shortage of options.
