The magical golden light of a spring evening bathed the Creswell High School courtyard as the CHS music program held their annual Spring Jam on Friday, June 1. Accompanying the event was a free hotdog barbecue given by the Creswell Music Boosters, complete with chips, sides and desserts provided by music students.
Spring Jam ”is our chance to say thank you to the community for their continued support in a more casual way,” said Music Boosters President Mandy Hoggard. ”It has long been one of my favorite events of the year.”
Although rows of chairs were provided, many audience members brought their own lawn chairs or simply sat on benches and steps around the courtyard, in keeping with the casual outdoor vibe.
The Creswell Bulldog Marching Band and Color Guard kicked things off, followed by a variety of group, solo, and duet acts that filled the open air with music. While a few of those acts had also been performed during the CHS Talent Show earlier in the week, Spring Jam guests were treated to many new acts as well.
Some highlights included vocal solos by Mathieu Foster and Jekay Bosisto; a duet by Bosisto and Anastasia Newell; an a cappella performance by Newell, Bosisto and Kylie Hecker, with body percussion provided by Newell; and a musical group that was something of a family affair, as singers Katie Culp and friend Katie Allison were backed by Culp’s brothers, Chris on guitar and Zach on drums.
Unlike a regular school concert, ”Spring Jam is an opportunity to hear primarily individual student acts that have not been chosen nor taught by Ms. Green,” Hoggard said. ”The students choose their pieces early on, work together and bring the piece to Ms. Green for final touches. It is incredible to see this much talent in our schools.”
