Dear Editor,
As the Chairman of the Creswell City Council Public Safety Committee I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who made the City of Creswell’s first-ever Emergency Preparedness Fair possible.
The Public Safety Committee and volunteers worked on the planning and preparation for the Emergency Preparedness Fair for about nine months. From the favorable comments that have been received, it feels especially great and well worth the effort.
It was excellent to see that this event brought out about 250 people, many of whom were young families. I found that to be especially encouraging, since the Public Safety Committee had decided to focus on kids.
During the Fair, there were about 330 2.5-gallon water jugs given away; they were a big hit. These are intended to start people thinking about water storage in case of an emergency. It is hoped that this event will begin to foster an atmosphere and culture of preparedness in Creswell.
I would first like to thank City Administrator Michelle Amberg and the entire Public Safety Committee, City Councilors Amy Knudsen and Judy Drago, as well as Lane County Sergeant Scott Denham. Their help, guidance and support to the Public Safety Committee was an integral part of the success of this event.
I would also like to thank the City Public Works Department. They worked hard to ensure the Cobalt Activity Center was ready and then got it back in operation quickly.
I would like to thank the entire City Council and their spouses. They were very generous in their support and for giving up a large part of their Saturday to be goodwill ambassadors for the City of Creswell. Thank you for your support and commitment to the people of the City of Creswell.
Thank you to the dozens of Creswell citizens and community members who helped in the Fair planning and preparation and who volunteered to assist the many vendors, companies and agencies to get their displays setup and taken down before and after the Fair. Your help and commitment to the success of this event was more than I could have dreamed possible.
I would like to thank all the vendors, companies and agencies for coming together to help the Creswell community learn, plan and prepare for emergency situations. Many people that I spoke with told me that they learned a lot and had a great time. That is a direct result of your participation and the hard work of you and your staff – you should be very proud!
Lastly, I would like to thank the many sponsors and an anonymous donor, whose in-kind and financial contributions allowed the Public Safety Committee to purchase and give away the water jugs with labels, kids’ passports and prizes, and the Fair banners.
I would like to give special thanks to some local businesses. First, to The Creswell Chronicle for their creation and preparation of the Fair promotions, from posters to full-page advertising and the great photos from the Fair – great job!
Second, to Crippen Design; they were instrumental in the design and production of the Fair banners, water jug labels, kids’ passports and a kids’ educational pamphlet. Thanks, Alex and your staff!
Third, a huge thank you goes to Sanipac for donating their Duck Truck, hotdogs with condiments, chips and drinks for everyone who attended the Fair. Thanks, Jenny, Aaron and Sanipac staff – they were delicious!
In the near future, the Public Safety Committee will be giving our final report to the City Council about the 2018 Emergency Preparedness Fair. From this report, decisions will be made regarding the future of the Fair. I look forward to this conversation and to future events.
