Edward William Hack Dec. 6, 1936 – July 25, 2022

Edward William Hack, 85, passed away on July 25, 2022.

Edward was born on Dec. 6, 1936 in Rochester, Minn. to parents William “Bill” E. Hack and Florence A. (McConnell) Hack. Edward was the first of four siblings, James Hack, Robert Hack and Lucinda White.

Edward graduated from Lourdes High School in 1954 having been elected senior class president and editor of the student newspaper. After high school he attended college at Rochester Jr. College and the University of Minnesota and later moved to Sacramento, Calif. with his family.

Having worked for several years while going to school at St. Mary’s Hospital and Rochester Community Hospital he found that he loved working in the hospital setting and went into nursing with the sole idea of specializing in nurse anesthesia.

After finishing nursing at San Joaquin General Hospital and Stockton College he entered the Anesthesia program at the Mayo Clinic Health Science program in Rochester, Min. He graduated and passed the national board exams in 1962 and became the solo anesthesia provider at Cottage Grove Hospital in Oregon on Jan. 1, 1963. Edward remained in that position until the hospital closed in 1998.

He went on to work part-time at the Oregon Eye Surgery Center until he retired in 2013. Edward married Donnell R. Grant in 1960 and had three children, Terrance, Tamara and Kimberly. They later divorced and in 1982 Edward married Margie Ann Thies and welcomed her daughter, Christy, into his life. They have spent many of their years enjoying bowling, golfing, jogging, skiing, playing tennis and spending much of their vacation time on the islands of Hawaii which in later years turned into six-month stays during the winter months. Edward and Margie became part of a large group of couples from the mainland and the Big Island that returned year after year to play and stay at Sea Mountain Golf Course.

Edward is survived by his wife of 40 years Margie; four children Terrance “Terry” (Susan) Hack, Tamara (Jim) Gilbert, Kimberly (Tim) Miller, Christy (Bill) Millard; two brothers Jim (Joanie) Hack and Robert (Adelle) Hack, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Edward is preceded in death by his parents William and Florence Hack and his sister Lucinda White.
