Darrell R. Hinderlie

Darrell was born on a very foggy night in North Bend Oregon. Darrell’s dad was in the Coast Guard at the time, and they had to travel by boat across the bay to get to the hospital. Because it was so foggy, the Coast Guard helped guide them. They put one guy at the dock, and they would shut the boat engine off, yell to the guy on the dock, listen for the response; then start the engine up again and travel in the direction of the voice. Doing this over and over, they safely got to the hospital. Being the son of a Coast Guard, he grew up living in various places along the Oregon and Washington coast, finally settling in Florence Oregon. He graduated from Siuslaw High School in 1956. After graduating, he enlisted in the Air Force. He was a very proud veteran. Darrell met his wife LoAnn, in Florence. They were married July 29th, 1962. They were just one month shy of celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this year. Darrell worked in lumber mills in Florence and Eugene for several years. He joined the Lane County Sheriff’s department as a reserve deputy in 1962 and spent many years volunteering with the department. Through his volunteerism, he was hired full-time as an assistant weighmaster in 1982. He retired from the department in 1999. Darrell was very proud to be a part of the Lane County Sheriff’s department. As a weighmaster, he met a lot of people who became good friends, including many truckers that got tickets from him. Darrell loved salmon fishing and crabbing. In his retirement years, he enjoyed working at the Lane County Fair and Home Shows, helping to coordinate exhibition hall setup and manning the back entrance. Darrell is survived by his wife LoAnn, his two daughters, Deborah Hinderlie and Penny (Joshua) Shields, his grandson, Kyle Couch, and his two sisters, Gen Amos and Sharon Chadek. He was preceded in death by his parents Archie and Wilma Hinderlie, sister Carol Alexander and grandson Devin Hinderlie who are all in heaven to welcome him home. Darrell is so loved and will be dearly missed by his family and friends; especially his lifelong friend of more than 70 years, Ron Ridings.
