A variety of genres, duets and rhythm accompaniment were showcased as the Creswell Middle School Choir, under the direction of Erik Telfer, performed their Spring Concert on March 20.
The concert opened with ”The Star-Spangled Banner,” followed by the traditional round, ”Rose, Rose,” ”Zum Gali,” featuring Leona Marquess on finger cymbals and ”Fly Away Home.”
The vocal duet ”A Million Dreams” was sung by Elliot Buehler and Lillie Stepp. ”At the beginning of the school year I invited students to share duets and solos at our concerts,” Telfer told the audience.
”Coming Home (Oregon)” featured Addie Garzanelli on cajon, while ”Scars to Your Beautiful” featured Chalyn Michelson on piano, Elliot Buehler on cajon and Emma Maness on egg shaker.
Audience participation was encouraged as the choir performed the Lumineers’ tune ”Ho Hey.” The number showcased a three-part vocal solo by Gabby Halgren, who also played cajon; Lily Lamm, who also played tambourine; and Buehler, who also played egg shaker.
Another lovely duet, ”Little Do You Know” was performed by Paige Gwaltney and Michelson, who also played piano.
”Changes” featured soloists Kyle Guthrie, Garzanelli and Halgren.
The choir closed with a song made famous by Miley Cyrus, ”The Climb” and ”Walkin’ on That Heavenly Road, featuring a three-part solo by Lamm, Marquess and Buehler.
Many of the pieces had been performed by the choir at other events. Telfer said that ”Coming Home,” ”Ho Hey” and ”Scars to Your Beautiful were prepared for the choir’s Good Earth, Home, Garden and Living Show performance in January, while ”Zum Gali” and ”The Climb” were performed at the Just Sing It Festival in Springfield in February.
”’Walkin’ on That Heavenly Road’ and ‘Fly Away Home’ were performed as mass numbers with other middle school choirs at the Just Sing It Festival and we decided to share those at the concert,” Telfer said.
”CMS Choir has been busy the first half of the new year and I couldn’t be more proud of how hard they have rehearsed to prepare for each of these events and their Spring Concert,” he added. ”This is a great group of students that continue to grow musically and enjoy the experience of creating music.”
