James A. Eberle : Dec. 21, 1942 – May 14, 2022

James A. Eberle of Cottage Grove, Ore. passed away on May 14, 2022, with his two daughters and granddaughter by his side. 

James was born December 21, 1942 in Colma, Calif. to his parents Johann and Gertrude Eberle who were immigrants from Switzerland. James graduated high school and was captain of the swim team. After graduation he entered the Army, and was stationed in Germany. He served 3 years, then 3 years in reserves, specializing in tank driving and demolition. 

On May 8, 1971, he married the love of his life, Genie Lou McCann in Reno, Nev. He is survived by his sons, Anthony Eberle and Brian Kelty, and his daughters, Charlotte Toves and Carmen Dowell. He came from a family of 8 siblings and is survived by his twin sister, Margarete Crowe, and younger brother George Eberle. He has 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. 

James started his career as a mail carrier in Daly City, Calif. In 1984 he accepted the position of Postmaster and moved his family to Cottage Grove, Ore. In 1989 he retired and enjoyed farming, gardening, and traveling around the world. When James and Genie lived in California, they enjoyed taking their children all over the states in their motorhome.

James was a big believer in volunteering. He donated blood for over 50 years. He served 38 years with our local Lions Club, serving over 30 of them as the club’s treasurer. He was an active organizer of the postal food drive. He also has volunteered with local programs: Bohemia Mining Days, Western Oregon Exposition, and Special Olympics, to name a few. 

He will be deeply missed by all who’ve had the pleasure of meeting him. Arrangements In the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel and Crematorium
