Girdon “Clay or Sonny” Clayton Kirkland, 75, of Springfield, Ore., passed away on Feb. 1, 2022. He was born to parents Matthew “Clayton” and Thelma Kirkland, on June 5, 1946 in Eugene.
Clay graduated from Thurston Senior High School in 1964.
He served in the United States Air Force from 1965-69 and was always very proud of his military service. Clay worked as a truck driver for over 30 years, he retired from Delta Sand and Gravel in 2009.
In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, water skiing, gardening, and spending time with friends and family (especially his granddaughters).
He is survived by his daughter Kellie Spangler, son-in-law Kyle Spangler, and his two granddaughters Megan Spangler and Hailey Spangler. He was preceded in death by his parents Clayton and Thelma Kirkland, and his brother Mel Kirkland who passed away Jan. 14, 2022.
The family has entrusted Andreason’s with the arrangements. Permanent interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland in May. Donations can be made to the American Lung Association.
