“Dick” was born May 8, 1930 to Carl Floyd Rowe and Jean Lucille Rowe (nee Pickard) in Pueblo, Colo. The family moved to Monroe, Ore., when he was 8 years old and eventually settled in Junction City, where he attended high school. He was involved in sports, primarily football and baseball. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and he became a diesel engineer on an LSAT and served during the Korean conflict.
When he returned home he went to work for Weyerhauser in Springfield. It was during this time he met the love of his life, Janice, and after a brief courtship they were married Dec. 9, 1953, in Carson City, Nev. He enrolled in a Portland barber school to learn a trade. After he earned his degree, he worked for other barbers in the area before striking out on his own and establishing himself as a self-employed barber and hair stylist.
His interests were woodworking, boat building, fishing, hunting (although he didn’t relish the killing part), camping, being a volunteer firefighter for the Springfield and Creswell fire departments, and just farting around in general. He moved his family to Creswell in 1968 and opened and operated his barber shop “Dick’s Clip, Snip and Style” until his retirement in 2018. He adored his family, was kind, quiet, easy-going and generous to a fault.
He died unexpectedly from health complications at RiverBend, Dec. 5, 2019. He was 89.
Janice was born Sept. 27, 1935 to Mark Ralph Woods and Gracie Ruth Woods (nee Trent) in Cody, Wyo. The family moved to Springfield, Ore., when she was 8 years old. She attended Springfield High School, participated in pep squad, choir, field hockey, and softball, graduating in 1952.
She attended Art’s School of Beauty, received her license, and went to work for her mother at Grace’s Beauty Shop. It was during this time that she met “my guy Dick” on a blind date orchestrated by one of her older brothers. They were married in 1953.
She began attending St. Alice Catholic Church, was baptized and raised her children according to her devout beliefs. Her faith was her rock and comfort during hard and trying times. After moving to Creswell, she became involved in the PTA (and dreaded “bake sales”), the Creswell Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary, her children’s 4-H and FFA activities, and was a staunch supporter of the Creswell Library.
Later on in life she joined a book club, and it became one of her greatest joys; she adored her book club “girls.” Her interests were cooking, baking, gardening, painting in oils and acrylics, collecting rocks, traveling, and she was an avid reader. She was fierce about her family, thoughtful, shy by nature, and did not suffer fools or excuses. Wyoming was never far from her heart. She died after a brief and unexpected illness on Oct. 27, 2021, at Pete Moore Hospice House.
Dick and Janice are survived by their daughters Carla Lorraine Rowe and Tami Rae Rowe, granddaughters Melissa Rae Rose Danielson and Jessica Lorraine Houston, and great-grandchildren Aralyn Raegene Burns and Kaden Xavier Kalcich.
