The Bulldogs won three events and the drill team qualified for state as Creswell High School’s equestrian team competed in the second Oregon High School Equestrian Teams (OHSET) South Valley District meet of the season, held March 9, 10 and 11 at the Oregon Horse Center in Eugene.
”We had a great weekend,” said Head Coach Lauri Thomas. ”There were outstanding performances in individual and team events.”
The Freestyle 4s (drill) team of Levi Bones, Jane Marquess, Grace Haga and Hope Walpole won their event. The win qualified the team for state since they also placed first at Meet 1; athletes placing in the top two during two of the season’s three meets earn an automatic bid to state.
Bones won Steer Daubing and Gracie Van Zandt won In-Hand Trail.
Bones also placed second in Breakaway Roping and he and partner Haga placed second in Birangle, making Creswell contenders for state in both events, pending Meet 3 results.
Van Zandt placed fourth in Showmanship; Walpole placed fifth in Individual Flags; Walpole and Marquess placed eighth in Birangle; Haga placed 10th in Barrels and 11th in Figure 8; Marquess placed 12th in Figure 8; Gracie Bones placed 13th in Individual Flags; and the team of Levi Bones and Gracie Bones placed 13th in Working Pairs.
Creswell’s Team Penning A (Marquess, Levi Bones and Haga) placed 17th; Walpole and Haga placed 17th in Working Pairs; Walpole was 21st in Barrels and 25th in Figure 8; Levi Bones was 23rd in Figure 8; Cassie Fergason was 26th in Individual Flags, 29th in Barrels and 34th in Figure 8; Marquess was 30th in Barrels and McKenzie Hutchinson was 36th in Barrels.
”All the athletes have worked long hours with their equine partners,” Thomas said. ”I am very proud of the partnerships that have developed, and I want to thank the coaching staff, parents and sponsors that continue to work tirelessly to support our team.”
The final district meet of the season is slated for April 6-8.
