Pac West Academy is hosting a free six-week fall football training camp from Sept. 11 through Oct. 23. The sessions will include speed-and-agility drills, individual position work, 1-on-1 competitions, 7-on-7 scrimmages, and lineman competitions. Pac West Academy – a post-grad program – is for football players who graduated high school in the class of 2020 or ’21 with college eligibility remaining. SPS LEADS WAY: Springfield is the first district in Oregon to adopt the hospital-grade UV-C disinfection technology. In addition to the layers of protection that SPS has implemented in recent months – enhanced filtration, increased clear air transfers, and advanced air purification systems – SPS will now use the power of UV-C to eliminate 99.9% of surface and air pathogens from classrooms and buildings. SPS purchased the 35 Arc devices with federal money designated to promote healthy schools and limit the likelihood of additional disrupted learning due to illness. The total cost of implementing this health and safety tool is $1.2 million.
INPUT NEEDED: City leaders in Springfield are in the process of determining what improvement projects will be worked on in the coming years. As the City develops its Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for 2023-27, it’s looking for ideas from community members to help guide the process. The CIP provides a five-year outlook of the City’s planned physical improvements. It includes cost estimates and projected financing sources for each project. To submit a project request to be considered for the CIP, community members can visit the CIP webpage and complete the Capital Improvement Project Request Form. The deadline to submit the project request form is Wednesday, Sept. 15. The program will be reviewed during a City Council work session in early 2022 and council will then hold a public hearing before adoption. POLICE ROUNDUP: A busy night for Springfield Police includes calls of gunshots, explosions and field fire. On September 2nd, while officers were already working a pursuit of the rider of a stolen motorcycle that resulted in a serious injury crash and serious injury crash involving a pickup that also caught fire, dispatch received multiple reports of gunfire, explosions and a field fire at about 2:27 a.m. When officers arrived at 39th St. and Kathryn Ave., Eugene Springfield Fire Fighters were working to put out the field fire. The fire was burning in a large patch of blackberries and a tree was also on fire. The fire was burning directly under power lines. One of the responding officers found a man on 39th Street who said it was his camp that was on fire. He told officers that he was changing the tank on his heater when one of the tanks caught fire and exploded. The fire continued to burn and exploded his other propane tanks, which were the loud bangs that nearby residents were hearing. Eugene Springfield Fire was able to put the fire out before it caused any major damage. Officers asked medics to check the man for injuries. He was not burned, but medics recommended he go to the hospital for further care. He declined to go to the hospital and was released at the scene.
WILLAMALANE: Willamalane facilities are operating under new hours since Sept. 7, and will be closing pool facilities for annual maintenance this fall. The Swim Center and Splash! will close for maintenance, repairs, and upgrades. While pools were closed intermittently throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, this annual maintenance is required due to the volume of water being drained into local water tables. Projects include general maintenance and repairs, safety upgrades, and more. While one pool is closed, the other will be open and operating with expanded hours: Swim Center will close Sept. 7-26; Splash! will close Sept. 26-Oct. 17.
