Hayward Field hosts track’s elite

KEVIN SCOTT/UO PHOTO

The 10-story Hayward Field Tower pays tribute to the University of Oregon legacy with graphics depicting five Oregon track and field icons. Along with legendary coach Bill Bowerman, the tower depicts Steve Prefontaine, Raevyn Rogers, Ashton Eaton and Otis Davis, the first Oregon Ducks track athlete to win Gold in an Olympics (2X Rome, 1960).

When we last wrote about Athletics, we were three months away from the inauguration of the stunning new Hayward Field and the 2020 Olympic Trials. It’s good to be back.

My wife Nancy and I were in Coos Bay recently and made a point to visit the Steve Prefontaine mural located downtown. Pre is depicted in two images, as a confident high schooler and as a mustachioed superstar who never backed down.

It was a reminder that Pre lives on in the spirit and soul of Oregon and with two prominent competitions coming to the new Hayward Field this month, The Chronicle resumes its coverage of what the world calls Athletics.
