SLSD, Pleasant Hill schools making schedule changes

South Lane and Pleasant Hill school districts continue to make rapid-fire changes as COVID-19 information changes, finding new ways to help struggling students and update mask policies.

South Lane School District officials stated in the May 21 e-newsletter that while some students struggled with the distance-learning structure during the pandemic, other students thrived. Officials are working out a plan for the upcoming school year to serve both sides of the experience.

Moving forward, the district will begin engaging in a “Response to Intervention” program, which will focus on high-quality instruction in core classes and provide support for struggling students. This process requires more teacher collaboration time, and Wednesday early-release times will be adjusted accordingly:

Elementary Wednesday schedule: 8:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Secondary Wednesday schedule: 8:10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Additional SLSD changes include the online-only learning option will remain next year for K-12 students implementing a new model and program. District high school students who have missed opportunities to earn credits toward graduation during the pandemic will be able to use the new program to make up courses during the school day and outside of it. More details will be shared in the fall.

Summer school planning is in progress; pre-identified students who will benefit most from this academic support will be invited in the coming weeks. The program runs weekdays, June 28-July 23. A partnership with the YMCA will allow for field trips, activities and more.

Pleasant Hill School District updated its mask mandate policy, and as of May 24 students, staff, volunteers and visitors are not required to wear face coverings while outdoors, including during P.E., recess, arrival and dismissal, said Superintendent Scott Linenberger.
