Candidate Column: Mark Boren for Lane Community College School Board of Directors

Commitment. Integrity. Community. Family. These are just some of the key tenets I live by and will bring to the Lane Community College Board of Directors. Serving as a board member is a convergence of experiences and principles, including an understanding of Board processes, student experience and goals for success. The area represented is mostly Western Lane County from Hwy 99 West to Florence and Lorane North to Monroe.  For these positions every precinct in Lane County votes.

I am running for this position because I believe in the potential of all our students.  Too often people run for the Lane Community College Board as a political stepping stone. NOT ME!  Lane Community College is a place where we can get creative in helping instructors, students, and their families succeed.  I want to actively lead and support that path to success.

As a retired Training Officer with Lane Fire Authority, I have been educating firefighters for the past 20 years.  I have been invested in serving the public in both my career and volunteering for the past 30 years. With my service throughout the county, I have built relationships with those that utilize Lane Community College to further their career and education

I am also a firm believer in giving back to communities. My vast volunteer experience includes a variety of positions in the community, such as; volunteer basketball coach, SMART reader, Component District liaison for the Lane Education Service District, Bushnell Leadership and Ethics Advisory Board, and Fern Ridge School District Board Member. These leadership roles, combined with my professional and life experience — including being a lifelong learner — are what guide my personal tenets, community commitment and interest in serving Lane Community College.

Family, this is the most important thing to me.  Of course, my own family, my fire service family, my basketball family, my faith family and my Fern Ridge school’s family.  Please help me become part of the Lane Community College family in May.
